...Arizona and Tennesee Bars

Why did I hear Dr. Phil's voice saying "What the Hell are they thinkin'?"

Nothing like providing drunk red-necks with the means to off themselves...

It may improve the gene pool....

I dunno. When I lived in Montana, I frequently saw people wearing guns in bars. Even did it myself a few times, if we'd been out shooting or whatever and stopped to socialize on the way home. I never saw anyone get shot. Never even heard of it, for that matter; I'm sure it's happened, but not that I ever heard of.

It's always been legal there, as long as the gun is not concealed and unless the establishment specifically prohibits serving anyone carrying a gun. And I don't recall ever noticing one that did.

Edit: And even in establishments that do prohibit serving alcohol to anyone carrying a gun, you can still carry one. You just can't drink.Which I think is an excellent idea, myself.

Yet there will be a few who are carrying a gun, where's it allowed to be concealed, lie about not carrying a gun and be served alcohol. It's this possibility which leaves me feeling quite uneasy.

When criminals know that law abiding citizens might be armed, they will be less inclined to enter the same bar looking to rob the place. I would feel safer if the folks I am drinking with were armed. I would also like to hear of one instance where someone licensed to carry a firearm in a bar shot someone that didn't deserve it.

I simply posted to add my thoughts. That is in no way to incite a debate on gun rights as that subject has been beaten way past death before. It was a simple comment I made as for a few: alcohol and firearms are a bad combo in the same manner that pills and alcohol, are a bad combo...nothing more, nothing less.

I'm sorry, Bear, I think I worded my post poorly and in a very confusing manner. I should have expressed more clearly the fact that (in Montana, at least) it's illegal for anyone carrying a concealed weapon to be in any establishment where (if I remember the wording) "alcoholic beverages are sold, dispensed, and consumed." In other words, it's never allowed to carry concealed in a bar in Montana, unless you're a peace officer.

Of course, this doesn't mean nobody ever does, but the penalty is quite stiff. Among other things, a licensed CCW permit holder would probably lose his permit, and be banned from obtaining another for at last a number of years, if caught violating such a law. And that's on top of the criminal penalties for the offense itself. And the danger of someone drinking while carrying a concealed weapon is no greater in states with liberal gun laws than in states with restrictive gun laws. In fact, it could arguably be less, because most states with liberal gun laws (Montana, Wyoming, the Dakotas. etc.) have very low rates of gun crime. So it follows that an unusually high percentage of gun owners in those states take the responsibilities of gun ownership very seriously.

I can see you don't spend much time in bars, because I've seen fights break out in the most upscale of them.

The last thing that would make me feel safer is knowing one of these drunken idiots was carrying.

One instance?  I could fill up ten pages of instances.

But then again, we really don't know if these guys "deserved it" do we?

Strip club shooting
During the 2007 NBA All-Star Game weekend, Las Vegas played host to a four-day party. Outside of a strip club on the early morning of Feb. 19, gunfire halted celebrations and left one man paralyzed and two others injured.

At Minxx Gentleman's Club and Lounge, NFL player Adam "Pacman" Jones "made it rain," or showered the stage with dollar bills. However, when the strippers began to collect the bounty without his permission, he became angry. A fight broke out and people were forced out of the club.

Outside, an unidentified shooter that police believe to have been part of Jones' entourage fired several bullets. One of the bullets lodged into bouncer Tommy Urbanski's spine, paralyzing him from the waist down.

No need to apologize Panda, your post was clear enough! I just thinking on the side of extreme caution. Though thanks for adding that extra info as my knowledge of the different state gun laws is quite limited. I know here in Canada, if a person got into a bar fight, their chances are greater from being stabbed over being shot.

Living in Milwaukee, ( the home of beer ) I probably spend much more time in taverns than most here. I have never seen a gun pulled in a bar by anyone who is licenced to carry one. I ask one more time. Can you give me one example in this Country where someone has been killed by a person who has a permit to carry ? If there were such an event the anti gun folks would be citing it as an example. Even they don't have an example to use in their argument...

I'm not worried about it. I think with the possibiity of everyone being armed in a bar.. there might be less shootings. It's the one with criminal intent that carry a gun illegally.. arm the innocent.. I can deal with that [:)]

Oddly enough, I did feel quite secure when I lived in that environment. You just got this feeling that with a half dozen very serious, tough-looking men meandering about the room with .357s or Colt .45s strapped to their hips, the odds that some punk was going to reach inside his coat and pull out a gun to start trouble with were pretty slim. Paradoxical as that may seem in an environment where it's outside the norm.

Of course, that was in Montana. People there are quite stable. Now, if we're talking about Kentucky or Arizona, well... yeah, I'd say there's legitimate cause for concern. [;)]

Also from Canada and a bar tender for many many years...I had everyone check knives with me at the bar as bear is correct in stating that stabbings will beat out (lol) shootings. The weapon that many forget about is the motorcycle helmet...I made riders check those with me after a particularly nasty incident involving 12 drunken loggers and 8 of the "bro's" and resulting in one death, one paralysis and 2 acquired brain injury. All in all I'll take my chances with a mature and sensible rancher with a gun.
