Where? Brick Lane in East London.

Why? It has the record number of injuries caused by people walking and sending text messages at the same time.

This comes from a study carried out by 118 118.

As always, your thoughts and comments most welcome.

That's funny!
But here in Chicago, we got that beat. He had a guy crash a commuter train - full of commuters - when he failed to see the signal telling him to stop.

Because he was busy sending a text message.

Kinda ridiculous. I have a habit of reading while I walk to/from work. I have never run into a pole or another person while doing so. Its called peripheral vision, and its a grand thing.

So does this mean we have a new, updated saying?

Rather than can't walk and chew gum at the same time, we change it to can't walk and text at the same time?

I always remember my mother telling me this story when I was younger. She grew up in a small town in Wales where everyone knew everyone. One Saturday afternoon she was walking through the town with her sister when they saw the new, and very good looking, curate walking down the other side of the street. My mother smiled and trying to impress turned to watch him..... and walked straight into a lamp post.   Bet she wishes they had had cushions then.

Dave,

That same thing happened in Southern California.

Now there are laws against it while running a train and/or driving.
You can look around and see that a lot of people driving ignore them,
but they are on the books.

You know, you get what you get, if your life is SO important and SO jammed with importance that you cannot step to the side of the curb and deal with issues--screw ya, smack your face in to the post, fall in front of a speeding train, I could care less, may be it will make people stop and think about how to manage their lives better.

stella41b -> RE: Putting cushions on lamp posts in UK streets (7/12/2009 12:05:08 PM)

I guess I've never understood this phenomenon of walking whilst using a mobile phone. Is it the novelty or is it just because it's possible?

But what struck me about the report was that this guy from a charity claims that it's not the fault of these people for not looking where they are going, but it happens because the pavements are bad and are so hard to walk on due to the many obstacles.

LadyPact -> RE: Putting cushions on lamp posts in UK streets (7/12/2009 3:07:00 PM)

It's because the pavements are 'bad'.  If the pavements were gone, do we get to blame the rocks on the dirt people will trip over instead?

hell's bells, i trip over carpet lint and run into the walls.  on a regular basis.  non texting (nor chewing gum, for that matter).

can i blame the vaccum?  or do i have to accept that the meds are just kicking my ass?

Blessed are the idiots.. for they shall be cushioned.

GreedyTop -> RE: Putting cushions on lamp posts in UK streets (7/13/2009 9:17:55 AM)

wasnt the recent DC Metro(Ithink) crash attributed to the driver texting?

Personally, I think this cushioning thing is beyond the pale... FFS, when did we (as a society) relinquish personal responsibility/accountabilty/etc?

And I agree with Arpig...  peripheral vision rocks.  It's routinely checked here, to get a driving license, or any routine eye exam..   should it now be required to get a text enabled phone?

LaTigresse -> RE: Putting cushions on lamp posts in UK streets (7/13/2009 12:49:58 PM)

I just read a news article about a person falling into an open manhole whilst texting. I laughed and wished I could have been there to see it in person.

LadyPact -> RE: Putting cushions on lamp posts in UK streets (7/13/2009 1:59:34 PM)

That would have been funny as hell!

ShaharThorne -> RE: Putting cushions on lamp posts in UK streets (7/13/2009 4:43:47 PM)

And people around me wonder why I refuse to have a cell phone and do twitter and texting.

I deal enough with my hair falling out and walking in a straight line! Damnable meds...

This was in NY, she is also "contemplating" suing the city now.  This is ridiculously stupid and why people in our country are being taught they don't NEED personal responsibility.
