Little People of America, at its annual conference in Brooklyn this week, has called for the Federal Communications Commission to ban the use of the word "midget" on broadcast TV.

"The word 'midget' objectifies you," said Clinton Brown, 27, of Hicksville, who co-chaired this year's conference at the Brooklyn Bridge Marriott in Downtown Brooklyn. "Growing up as a little person, because you're different, you experience the ups and downs of some cruelties and prejudices. How many times have people I don't know come up to me and wanted to pick me up?"

Brown said the group filed an official complaint with the FCC.

In April, Little People of America protested an episode of NBC's "Celebrity Apprentice," in which contestants created a detergent ad called "Jesse James and the Midgets." The contestants, including Joan Rivers, suggested bathing little people in the detergent and hanging them to dry.

I don't know, but I think the term 'little people' sounds much, much sillier than midget.

slaveluci -> RE: Lollipop Guild asks FCC to ban the word 'midget' on television (7/8/2009 2:50:44 PM)

So they feel objectified and pissed? I wanna puke everytime I hear words on TV (or radio or see them in magazines, books or even forums like these) like white trash, hillbilly, etc. that "objectify" and belittle people like me and mine. Society thinks it's cute and funny and enlightened to look down its collective nose at some people so whaddya gonna do? Life offers no guarantees that we won't ever be hurt, offended, or objectified. The people who are on the receiving end of such words just have to realize the ignorance of those saying them and move on.

If "midget" bothers them, they can express that to people and ask them not to refer to them as such. But, "banning" a word? I hate to start down THAT slippery slope. Even the "N" word is allowed and acceptable (to some) as long as only certain folks say it. Restricting free speech just ain't the route we should ever take................luci

Hell, I didn't even know that dwarves had an organization with a huge convention. I wish I was in New York, I would have loved to have seen a bunch of midgets walking around. I only see one every once in awhile. [:D] It's just hillarious. I know it's not PC, but midgets and fat guys are just plain funny. Sorry, I can't help it.

Especially since little people originally referred to fairies.

I'm against banning words in general.

pixidustpet -> RE: Lollipop Guild asks FCC to ban the word 'midget' on television (7/8/2009 4:47:12 PM)

my best friend in high school was officially one inch too tall to be classified as having dwarfism.  one. inch.  she's 4'6".  she made me feel like a giant at 5'1".

i can see where the term would be offensive to some people.  but i agree with slaveluci, how can we ban every word that is offensive to an individual (or a limited group of individuals)?  blonde jokes would be gone.  redheads being asked if the carpet matches the drapes would be gone.  the word "retard" and its cousin "tard" would be gone (that might be a good thing).

you cannot sanitize and make all PC a language.  when you do that, you lose the meaning of a special word....freedom.

kitten, getting back down off the soapbox.

Rule -> RE: Lollipop Guild asks FCC to ban the word 'midget' on television (7/8/2009 4:53:05 PM)

I think the whole dictionary ought to be banned. Let's start with the midget word 'a'. Anyone can see that it is a midget word and so by implication it is derogatory. It is also black. That is bad, I tell you. Hence for being black and bad, it is also discriminatory. It also has an enclosed space, like a prison cell. That is also bad. Even worse is that the prison gate is open. All kinds of criminals could escape from the open gate of the 'a'! It ought to be banned and by implication all words that have an 'a' in them ought to be banned.

I have not even started on telling you how bad the 'a' is. For example: it is utterly VAGUE:  a man has eaten a banana? Who cares? Nobody cares about such an 'a'. Then there is the capital 'A'. Anyone with the slightest knowledge about fui sheng (or whatever it is called) immediately recognizes that it is like a sharp blade ready to draw blood from the text above it. That is very bad according to feng shui (or whatever). I cannot even tell you how bad the two legs of the 'A' are according to feng shui, because I do not know that much shui feng.

I am all for banning midgets and for banning any other words in the dictionary. I would backspace all of this, but unfortunately since I deleted that word from my dictionary, I no longer can recognize the backspace key...

How would they be able to broadcast sporting events like Midget Racing? or the ever popular Midget Wrestling? Dwarf Wrestling just doesn't sound right. And what about the MG Midget?

I had always understood there was a significant difference between dwarves and midgets. A dwarf is a person that has disproportionate body features. Commonly being arms and/or legs that are short with pronounced curvature, stubby fingers, all with an average sized (though appears oversized) head. A midget is a person who is very short in stature but has all body features fully proportioned with each other and no curvature of the limbs, and nimble slender fingers.

I'm with luci and pixidust on this one.  It's ridiculous to attempt to ban a particular word. On the other hand, if I met or knew of a midget person and they told me they were offended by the word, of course I wouldn't use it when speaking to them.

I'd tell them to stick it up their little bitty asses unless they tell me where they buried their pot of gold. Then I'll call them whatever they want to be called.

Funniest damn post I've seen here in ages!

I've always been suspicious of little 'a', now I know why!

Am I the only person who is suprised they haven't banned Frosty the snowman for promoting smoking?

The funny thing is, little people sounds a little patronising.

Unexpected. I would have thought they only experience the downs.
