GYPZYQUEEN -> Pannus?Panniculecotomy? (7/1/2009 10:42:19 PM)

THIS question(s) for anyone who has a pannus..

a hanging flesh apron lower stomach..often the result of a weight loss..
I recently lost 100 lbs and have one and I HATE IT..
I could wear clothes 2-3 sizes smaller without it[:@].
It is uncomfortable .
IT IS NOT FAT LEFT TO BE LOST >>IT IS SKIN THAT WILL NOT TIGHTEN and localized fat balls.Dont't tell me to exercise etc..I have..It is what is left.

A panniculecotomy removes the PANNUS thru surgery( cosmetic)...sometimes it is paid for if there has been proof of wieight loss or DR record of hygeine prblerms/infections etc.
or there is tearing in the stomach wall.other wise it is about $9000.

My question is
IF YOU HAVE a PANNUS

Would you consider a panniculectomy?
WOULD you if it was paid for?
Would you pay for it?
HAVE you had one and are you happy with the reults

thanks  GQ

Learn something new everyday -- pannus, huh?

Yep, I would have one, if I lost enough weight, I would even pay for it -- $9k is not bad for plastic surgery . . . . *shrugs*

It may be easier to medically qualify than you might think. A friend of mine was considering bariatric* surgery & she started going to the doc to be treated for the recurring skin infections (fungal stuff) she gets under the folds of flesh, as that was pretty much sufficient to justify the procedure medically. & that was here in the US, under her private insurance. Up in Canada I'd expect them to be more realistic about this stuff than down here in the states.

I know a woman who had a whole-body lift after she'd lost an enormous amount of weight via bariatric surgery. She's very uncomfortable with showing her body because of the scarring, tho' she's now 'normal' sized. Not exactly the same thing, but I offer it up as thought fodder . . . . .

* Bariatric surgery is the reduction of the stomach pouch to reduce the volume of food that can be eaten, for those wondering . . . . . That one I'll pass on, but I know quite a few people who've had it . .. .

it's not the size of the pannus, it's what you do with it.....

Uwillplzme -> RE: Pannus?Panniculecotomy? (7/2/2009 3:06:10 AM)

I was 470#, had gastric bypass and 6 yrs later holding at 230#. 2 yrs ago I had a panneculectomy. I had a huge pannus. It hung to my knees..when removed was about 35# of flesh. Insurance covered it due to the health risks. It was a painful procedure being cut from hip to hip with 3 drains. BUT... I would do it all again. I would chose a different surgeon...but that's another story!

My sister had a high risk pregnancy, twins and total bed rest for more than half of it. Took her months to lose the weight and get back in shape and at the end she still had to have plastic surgery for the extra skin. Since it was a side effect of the high risk pregnancy, her insurance covered it.

Rainfire -> RE: Pannus?Panniculecotomy? (7/2/2009 11:07:32 AM)

Not from me it won't, GQ.... I lost about 80 pounds last year and have been keeping it off except for the occasional 10 pound bobble over the winter. (You know the kind, up 5-10#, down 5-10#, all depending on what I've been eating and how much exercise I've done.)  I would really like to lose another 25-40 pounds but at my age and with my health history, I don't think it's happening. I can try though!!!

I have a pannus as a result of weight and having babies sure as hell didn't help it. I would love to have the surgery one day because you are right about it causing us to have to wear larger clothing. As a result of it, I have a hard time finding comfortable clothing. So count me in for having it done, if money were no issue. Hell, for that matter, while at it, I'd go for a boob lift too. Again, the weight issue and babies sucking on the tits for years has left them well past the failure point of the pencil test. Shit, I could hold a BOX of pencils under my boobs, which I don't like. Lumus doesn't seem to mind but I do and I get very uncomfortable about my body image. Ok, downright hateful about it. Yes, I have body image issues. [&o]

Uwillplzme, what type of scarring is there? I had heard that it could be hidden very well to the point of unnoticeable but you know how some stories just get exagerated. Was it painful? And if you don't mind me asking, why would you choose another surgeon? Feel free to cmail me if you like. [:)]

subtee -> RE: Pannus?Panniculecotomy? (7/2/2009 11:37:00 AM)

I think you should do it, if you can. You're beautiful!

Is that what Kate did after having her litter of eight?

tazzygirl -> RE: Pannus?Panniculecotomy? (7/2/2009 12:02:09 PM)

if you go here you will see some examples of before and after photos.

Rainfire -> RE: Pannus?Panniculecotomy? (7/3/2009 4:20:20 AM)

Thanks, Tazzy, boy - I sure saw my body shape in one specific "Before" picture..... [&o]  But it gives me hope knowing it could be done. I'd love to lose the "pooch".

Rainfire -> RE: Pannus?Panniculecotomy? (7/3/2009 7:32:24 AM)

Ya know, if we're gonna have boob lifts and tummy tucks, why not have that pussy tuck as well? You know where they can tighten things up and make you a brand new virgin? Something like a vaginal rejuvenation?  Dem monsters were hard on the body......  [>:]

Missokyst -> RE: Pannus?Panniculecotomy? (7/3/2009 7:38:23 AM)

If I had the cash I would pay for it in a heartbeat!  I hate that apron and I find I deliberately keep the weight on because when I drop a few pounds it's there.. no no no no no no AARRRRRRGGGGGGGHhhhhhhhh
9K?  I will start saving.
I have seen people who have had it done.  The women I saw has some scarring but I have a scar on my stomach from major surgery, scars are livable, aprons are not.

brandi1379 -> RE: Pannus?Panniculecotomy? (7/3/2009 11:07:47 AM)

I would so have it done. If anything just so my clothes would fit right. I hate having to buy bigger pants. Maybe in the future they will have a machine were we can step in and push a button next to the kinda body we want. And we can change it like every couple of years...ok i think that thought should have stayed in my head lol

Being a word whore....I just want to know what a Pannus is.

LookieNoNookie -> RE: Pannus?Panniculecotomy? (7/3/2009 7:16:41 PM)

(Okay.....Actually....maybe I don't.)

peachgirl -> RE: Pannus?Panniculecotomy? (7/3/2009 7:21:16 PM)

I would just love to get rid of the extra skin after having babies.  I guess after 8 years I've lost all hope that it's going to snap back, lol.
I have heard that tummy tucks are painful, so I would imagine that the more complicated the surgery, the more painful it would be.
if money were not an option, I would be signing myself up today!

porcelaine -> RE: Pannus?Panniculecotomy? (7/3/2009 7:36:47 PM)

this is a very good forum for finding additional information and insurance tips on trying to get your procedure covered.

they also provide pictures, insight, and surgeon references/recommendations. best of luck to you and congratulations on the weight loss!

 Gypzy queen if it is making you unhappy then I think you should definitely have the surgery. As far as I am aware there is no other method of removing a pannus. Well done for getting the weight off, more power to you gypzy but after all that effort what is the point if you are still not comfortable with your body? I can completely understand why you would not want one so my advice is go for it, good luck.
