Thats also why they never found the metals they were looking for either. The Russians heard when that comet hit our American west, that deposits of nickel and other metals were remaining, after the impact. Thinking only of a profit, they sent out a scientist to find those metals, and instead of finding a huge crater in the ground, he found what he found. Since it exploded before it landed (they estimated between 5 and 7 miles above the earth), of course there was no huge crater. Instead they found little 'pits and pockets' scattered here and about, no doubt from the explosion of the comet, itself. But in those 'pits and pockets', no sign of the nickel and other metals they were looking for. They have since found rings of carbon (a compound also found in a comet) in trees that would date back to about the time of the event, so leaned heavily towards it being a comet, but did not have enough proof to definitively say what it was...just a good, educated guess. If this stuff interests anyone, and you never saw The Siberian Apocolypse, it would be a good show to watch, and Greedy's link adds further to it.
