Ok, so it's looking like we're going to be flying out to the Chicago area to see my oldest monster graduate from Navy basic training at Great Lakes Naval Training Centre.  There's just one problem: I've never been to the area and have no clue whatsoever on which airport to fly into (O'Hare or Midway?) or what the nearest hotels would be for the base.

Anyone here from the Chicago area that can help enlighten me or recommend some place? We're looking at being there towards the end of January 2010, unless the monster goes in early....

TIA!

The one in Great Lakes or in Peoria?

Likely the one on the lake.  So, you will want to fly into Midway.  Are you renting a car or what?

How far away are you willing to be?

WOOOOOT!!! Got it!

I feel like a silly school girl, in all my travels, I've never even flown through Chicago. Which is fun and exciting. Bad thing is I have no clue where the hell I'm going, other than "Chicago" which I do know is one HELLUVA big-assed place! Looking at a map is one thing, being there is something entirely different.

*sigh*  Kind pathetic though that I have to get a passport just to get back into my own country.....

End of January, LH, if the monster doesn't go in early or wash out.... His mouth and attitude have been getting him in trouble for almost as long as he's been alive.   Estimated time based on current info is around January 21st or so.

Cuffncollar, thanks for that great link, I'm checking it right now!

Aylee, all I know is that it's Great Lakes Naval Training Center, north of Chicago. You are talking to the West Coast girl who now lives on the East Coast and has never had the chance to check out the Central parts of the States, even if my family hails from Nebraska and Missouri. As far as I can tell, it's about 30 miles north of O'Hare Airport, according to the one website. That's why it's research time NOW, so I can have as much done as possible before then. Don't wanna mess this one up, especially if the little punk manages to graduate.

Actually, where you fly into depends on which airline you fly.  Midway can't handle anything much bigger than a 737...O'hare can take anything up to and including the huge wide body planes.  Stay away from the hotels around either airport......altho, since it's winter in Chicago, the rates won't be as expensive.

More importantly, dress warm!  You'll be right on the Lake, and it's colder than a witches tit in a brass bra up there!  If you have the extra time, head down into Chicago to the planetarium, the Shedd Aquarium and the museums on the lake.  And stuff yourself on the hot dogs!  Pizza....meh, it's okay, but prefer NY style to Chicago style.

Check and see if you can even stay on base....some places have quarters for folks to stay at...if it's for a graduation, then book as early as you can, even the local hotels will be full......and if they give the guys weekend passes, have your son look around at the local hotels....cheaper, and they are usually clean.  Unfortunately, I was always in the southern part of Cook County, so I'm not sure what's up there.

Uhhhhh, Soul?  Just where the hell do I live now?????

ON THE GREAT LAKES IN CANADA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I know about dressing warm but thanks for the reminder. Not that I needed it.

I'm looking at hotels now, there's a Holiday Inn Express and a number of near-by hotels. It will be one of the first things I book once we get firm information. As for the other places, I'll tell Lumus about them, we'll keep them in mind. I love going to aquariums and the Planetarium sounds great, just the sort of thing I like. Maybe not what Daddy likes though so we'll see..

The main concern I have is weather, if one of those notorious Chicago storms hits and strands us in, y'know? I prefer traveling in spring or fall but hey! I don't get to pick the dates on this one!

Trust me, hun...Chicago is a whole other kind of cold.......the wind chill factors alone are bone numbing......

Yeah, the storms can be tricky.......and fast......but they are pretty well equipped for it at the airports, it has to be really bad before they stop flying.....I've flown in the winter from there, never missed or had a flight cancelled....you'd need to be more worried about the fog....that'll ground planes in a heartbeat.  And yes, it's possible for there to be fog in the winter time.....my son got fogged in there on January 2nd, 2003.  Fortunately, I still lived there and picked him up so he'd have a place to sleep.

Just drag ol' Lumy baby along to those places and tell him to behave......let his inner child come out....he's too young to be that much of an adult!     And you can probably just hitch a ride on the trains to get downtown to the places I mentioned.  For a real thrill ride, hop in a cab in downtown Chicago.......

Good luck to your son. I graduated from boot camp in Great Lakes many years ago. There are plenty of decent motels near the base. The base is about 30 miles north of O'hare, 45 or so from Midway, so you'll need a rental car.

If you want to come into the city I strongly recommend riding the commuter trains in. A line has a station right near the boot camp gate. The planetarium, aquarium and natural history museum are all together right on the lake front. Conveniently a shuttle bus runs from the commuter train station downtown out to the museums.
