Here's a way early clip of some gent named Bill Bailey doing the moonwalk way back when. I always thought (like most people) that Michael Jackson came up with that move. Mike certainly did it a lot smoother.

I never really understood the big deal about the moonwalk, I mean its not really all that impressive a move or anything.

The back slide, the original name, has been around since the 1940's at least. Jackson even acknowledge that he learned it from a break dancer. Nothing wrong with that but sort of indicative of the hype that built up around him that people assume he invented it.
