Any Man who raises a child with love and affection instead of running away.

There are the Greatest Men this country can have because thier Legacy is the love they show to the following generations

I'll agree in applauding this answer, and I'll also add my dad. He showed me that a man can be strong and gentle, that love is to be cherished, and that you don't give up.
i love this post, Level!!!

I'm not sure about raising men [or women] on a pedestal simply for bringing up the children they bring into the world. That is a base line in my opinion a minimum requirement not going above and beyond...

Alas, Starbuck I think there is a tendency to do that for both sexes, not just men.  And there are a startling number of them who do just the bio dad thing and abdicate responsibility.  I do think men who raise children in a loving way deserve a lot of credit, just as women do.

i will not put words in Steels mouth, but there are fathers who are not a part of their childrens lives, and there are fathers who support their children financially only because they are obligated to do so...

Then there are fathers who are also dads...

Agreed. The OP asked about those who have gone above and beyond the call of duty.

Raising one's own child to be a productive member of society and be able to survive in the world and have a fulfilling life is a parent's duty. It is meeting a minimum standard- not going above and beyond it.

My dad was career military. He put his life on the line in Vietnam, and he is still teaching me life lessons every day. He's my hero.

If you could pick one man , it maybe a public figure , celebrity , or just the average joe . You might like to reconize as going up and above the call of duty in life , who might it be ?

WHY  NOT ?     THESE WOMAN ARE SEARCHING FOR  HEROS !

We are???

I'm personally not. I searched for a human being who was compatible with me <shrug>.

A hero? That's a lot of pressure to put on someone!

All of the people that are really good teachers. Especially those, within the public school system, and most especially those that are doing so, within less than stellar, school districts.

"Tank Man." I don't know about you, but any guy who walks out in front of an entire column of Chinese tanks, to stop them from rolling into the square and start killing fellow students and countrymen... you have to admire their strength.

I would agree that he was amazing.  Photographs of that little guy with his shopping bags are still plastered to walls all over the world.  He's the very definition of the anonymous hero.

I do not know my Biological Father, he left when I was a year old.

The man who adopted me did not HAVE to be my Father... he chose to be.

It is easy to walk away from a child but those children do not get that option most of the time.

Any Father who does what he should knowing that you can walk away a coward and dissapear is an amazing thing.

Today I have Three Fathers. The Man who adopted me. The man who married my Mother after she divorced, and andi's Father. All of whom have shown that they were willing to step in and do the right thing even when the man who was responsible for my life did not.

TO ME... Any Man who stays and does his best to raise a child with LOVE and AFFECTION and HONOR is a HERO to me.

Steel

I don't think I could pick a single greatest person, but two of my favorites are Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu, who battled a great evil, won more or less nonviolently, and worked to create a better nation for all its people. I realize South Africa is far from perfect, but it never erupted into the bloodbath that many folks expected to follow apartheid.

LaT...to me there is a HUGE difference between a father and a daddy.

A father is a sperm donor.
A daddy is a hero.

Holly, I think most are like my father. Somewhere in the middle. Certainly more than a sperm donor. I know he loves me, and I certainly love him. But he's never been a hero.

point taken, LaT. I am one of the lucky ones. My dad was my hero when i was very young, and now Jim is a hero to our son

Holly, do not feel bad. Please. I don't. I love my dad for the man he is and wouldn't trade him for a million heros.

It just is what it is. For whatever reason, we get what we get. Seems the powers that be didn't think I needed anyone other than the dad I got. It is more than enough. I got love and 100% acceptance and support. I am a happy daughter.
