 If you could pick one man , it maybe a public figure , celebrity , or just the average joe . You might like to reconize as going up and above the call of duty in life , who might it be ? [8|]

First thought which comes to mind: Volunteer Firefighters.

I think it would be my Sir.  He is the most conscientious, even-tempered & fair, unselfish person.  He does more for the people and animals in his personal life and on the job than any man I know.  It's truly and honor to belong to him and serve him.

Even with cutting out about 50% of the adults throughout history (women- and what's up with that, BTW?) I still can't name just one. Jesus of Nazareth, and Martin Luther King come to mind... I'm not religious but they both knew they'd be giving up their lives, for the causes they advanced.

Along the same lines, I'd pick everyone else who is willing to routinely put their own lives at risk to make the world a better place- such as law enforcement officers, firefighters and military members of both genders.

 Yes Dreamer ,   Sorry !  in regards to not including woman ,   Sister Teresia  ,  Princess Diane   ,  I know there are many GREAT WOMAN !

dreamerdreaming -> RE: Greatest Man ? (6/23/2009 6:54:01 PM)

S'alright,
   I suppose you can post whatever question you like here, as long as its within the TOS of the site. Because you are asking about one particular gender does not make it a sexist question. But you can see how some might take it that way.

Re: women: Joan of Arc comes to mind.... And more recently: Benazir Bhutto.

PeonForHer -> RE: Greatest Man ? (6/23/2009 7:28:17 PM)

Can we have people who are dead?  If so: for bravery - any spy in German occupied terrority in WW2.  I know there are all sorts of bravery but it's this sort that, for all sorts of reasons, I find most striking of all.  The people who did that must have had testicles of titanium (the women included).

(On my mind at the moment because I've been reading about it.)

Any man who proudly kneels and says: "I am here to serve you Mistress, no matter what..."

aidan -> RE: Greatest Man ? (6/23/2009 8:13:50 PM)

...Bwuh?

Not that this is an entirely unworthy discussion to have, but I must ask...why here?

jester51 -> RE: Greatest Man ? (6/23/2009 8:48:47 PM)

WHY  NOT ?     THESE WOMAN ARE SEARCHING FOR  HEROS !

MarsBonfire -> RE: Greatest Man ? (6/23/2009 9:05:30 PM)

"Tank Man." I don't know about you, but any guy who walks out in front of an entire column of Chinese tanks, to stop them from rolling into the square and start killing fellow students and countrymen... you have to admire their strength.

My father. He was a great carpenter, he had the mind of an engineer. If he could evision it he could build it. He was kind, funny, loving, supportive and always encouraged me to be all the I could be.

The greatest man to me is my Dad.

Firefighters & Cops who put themselves in front of danger every day to protect all of us.
Veterans for what they have done for us and others who keep us free.
Solider's of all ranks, nationalities, backgrounds and divisions for sacrifices they make to go wherever or whenever they are needed. Their families who never know if their loved ones are coming home.
Paul Newman for creating an empire so that children of all ages, fighting an incredibly invasive disease get to have fun and just be normal at a camp. They don't have to deal with the stares and pointing at them by people of all ages that do not understand.

Eleanor Roosevelt who showed us that beauty is in all of us by courage, conviction and helping others.
Princess Diana who reached out to many with compassion and caring and by supporting many charities that helped countless others.

My Father. He was total caregiver to my Mother who was stricken with Parkinson's disease for 25. He married a year later at the age of 80 to someone he knew since the second grade. 7 days after the wedding, she had a stroke. He took care of her also for the next 7 years until her death of metastatic cancer. When she had to go to a nursing facility, he would go every day and sit with her without fail. At 86, he still maintains his home and yard. He is honored by lifelong friends. If he wasn't such a stubborn old German, I'd drag him to Arizona so that we could take care of HIM. I am proud to be his daughter.

I say Firemen and Veterans.

My opinion: just because a man steps in to raise a child; be a father doesn't make him special. A man who runs away is not a man.

I'll agree in applauding this answer, and I'll also add my dad. He showed me that a man can be strong and gentle, that love is to be cherished, and that you don't give up.
