suhlut -> Obama to sign anti-smoking bill (6/22/2009 9:09:29 AM)

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/us_obama_tobacco

What really pisses me off about this kinda thing is that..

even THOUGH i quit smoking this past Aug.. well..

back when i used to smoke.. i had started off smoking regular flavored cigs.. and never really enjoyed how they tasted, and often thought/wished they would come out with some different flavors.. kinda like what i could see in cigars.. cherry ect.

So.. around and about, comes the day that a former tenent renting from me..introduced me to the first flavored ciggy i ever enjoyed.

it was a whiskey flavored ciggy, produced by Camel called Backstreet blend...and wow did i love that flavor.. Its to bad it was a limited production flavor..cause it was soon sold out.
They also produced other flavors.. some of them also being limited editions..and others being part of their normal production. Chocolate minty..another one that tasted like a adult drink.. and an orange flavored one.

I loved each of them, but had set favs, over the months that they sold these under their Exotic blends brand. They were sold in pretty and colorful tins.

After awhile, i began reading about parents being angry towards Camel company.. for producing these flavored cigs, because, they claimed..were making cigs that were targeting underage smoking.Soon enough Camel took action, and discontinued the production.

After that, i discovered an off brand called Sweet dreams.. that were even better and more flavorful of a cig. These also were chocolate flavored..and mint flavored...and they also sported filters that had been dipped in sugar.. which really hightened the chocolate or mint flavor perfectly.. i began to think of them as being calorie free dessert cigs..  i loved loved loved them.

Big problem was..the only place i was able to purchase any flavored cig, was at a Indian reservation..which..while rather close..was still a bit of a trip.. just for cigs..
So, i didnt have them very often..and would spare them out for as long as i could.

Now.. i am an adult.. and have wanted flavored cigs for many years as an adult, and smoked my first flavors, all as an adult. i don't for one second, believe that Camel produced flavored cigs, as a means to lure children into becoming smokers, anymore then an average pack of regular flavored cigs sitting on any store shelf might. Its sad that they bowed down to the pressure..and lost customers like me..
Female adults that want flavored cigs.. on the same realm as men that get to smoke flavored cigars.

So, why don't they force cigar companies from having cherry flavored..or grape.. or orange..or whisky flavored cigars? How is that not the same type of lure for children? Its not fair that flavored cigs were targeted. Camel used to only sell their Exotic blend cigs..in catalogs to a set and limited group of customers. I so wish that they might have gone back to that route, rather then buckle under pressure to stop production completely. i'd have loved to continue to order that way.

Adult (females mostly) have a right to choose to enjoy a flavored cig, over regular flavors. Adult men also enjoyed them, my husband and the male tenent loved the alcohol flavered ones (whisky..and the other)..

And now i read that there is a law that bans all flavored cigs...so there also goes the Sweet dreams brand, and any of the others. Thats not fair to those of us that might prefer a variety and choice of flavor.

Anyways... i am glad that i quit smoking.. i'd be even more angry then i already am..to have my adult choices..taken from me.

There's nothing so rabid as an ex-smoker trying to proselytize.

Aneirin -> RE: Obama to sign anti-smoking bill (6/22/2009 9:33:34 AM)

Why don't they go the whole hog and call a  worldwide conference to ban tobacco full stop, as until they stop reaping the revenues via taxation from tobacco, they are in essence, two faced.

If not worldwide, just the USA, for sure as the earth is round old Gord in Britain will follow suit.

suhlut -> RE: Obama to sign anti-smoking bill (6/22/2009 9:51:58 AM)

k...so i had to go and look up that word:

http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/proselytize

proselytize

Main Entry:
pros·e·ly·tize [image]http://www.merriam-webster.com/images/audio.gif[/image]
Pronunciation:
\ˈprä-s(ə-)lə-ˌtīz\
Function:
verb
Inflected Form(s):
pros·e·ly·tized; pros·e·ly·tiz·ing
Date:
1679
intransitive verb 1 : to induce someone to convert to one's faith 2 : to recruit someone to join one's party, institution, or cause transitive verb : to recruit or convert especially to a new faith, institution, or cause — pros·e·ly·ti·za·tion [image]http://www.merriam-webster.com/images/audio.gif[/image] \ˌprä-s(ə-)lə-tə-ˈzā-shən, ˌprä-sə-ˌlī-tə-\ noun — pros·e·ly·tiz·er [image]http://www.merriam-webster.com/images/audio.gif[/image] \ˈprä-s(ə-)lə-ˌtī-zər\ noun   sooo are you saying that about me.. or about Obama?..lol i personally.. have no cause.. just think people should have a right to choose. And NOT have government making decisions FOR me. i was also just thinking.. maybe the best way for camel to have handled the problem of parents complaining about their candy flavored cigs, sold in colorful and luring tins...was to just put those same cigs into a reg paper pack, and lable them with some generic looking lable. That way, they look no different to children on the outside package..as any regular flavor. Seems to me, that that would have put them on even footing as a reg pack of cigs.  Soo... youd have a choice of : Camel Cigarettes      or      Camel Cigarettes                                                   Regular flavor                  Bourbon flavor  ect but, perhaps Camel had other reasons to discontinue the production, maybe there wasn't high enough of an interest with their customers. i only know..at the time.. i'd loved them, and enjoyed them...as was my right..as an adult..to do. As for if its Obama that is proselytizing.. well then, yes, we are on the same page... And while i don't think it is all on Obama.. he, ''as a smoker thats fighting his own battle to quit" should also realize there are still adults around, that have the right to NOT have someone force them to quit.. or to limit their choice in what is available to enjoy. His struggle.. is not everyone's struggle.

I like ganja tea ... I can live without tobacco [;)] ... and paying as much tax. [;)]

Not sure how all those expensive fireworks that they like to let off over "other peoples houses" will get paid for though?

(Of course if they try to up the tax on cider to compensate ... let me at em !... [sm=evil.gif][sm=axe.gif][sm=bury.gif][sm=blasted.gif][sm=duel.gif][sm=sodoff.gif][sm=trident.gif][sm=wiggleass.gif][sm=sm.gif][sm=evil.gif])

No, actually it's non-smokers that want to force smokers to quit because they don't like it.  What really amazes me about the folks that feel compelled to walk up and chastise me as I smoke a cigarette OUTSIDE is that most of them are incredibly fat women.  When I say fat......I mean INCREDIBLY, HUGE, GARGANTUAN FUCKING FAT WOMEN!  [:D]  It really boggles the mind that someone with their own gravitational pull would dare to lecture me on health.

Aneirin -> RE: Obama to sign anti-smoking bill (6/22/2009 7:01:54 PM)

I wonder, these that slaveboyforyou mentioned, these excessively large people, what would be worse for their health, stuffing food until the cows come home resulting in life threatening size, or smoking tobacco and there reap it's benefits of retarding the appetite. Tobacco, it was always said, was the ultimate slimming aid.

suhlut -> RE: Obama to sign anti-smoking bill (6/22/2009 9:36:01 PM)

Well.. i didn't start this thread to have it..also..turned into a "fat" thread..

They have sucessfully kicked smokers..from first restaurants...and then eventually tarverns, bars, and work places.. and forced many a smoker to adapt to smoking outdoors. Now many companies are even saying that employees may no longer smoke.. at all.. on the company property.. so.. you cant even go sit in your own car and light up.. while on break.

And, as slaveboy states, you can hardly even smoke outside anymore, without somone complaining or giving unwanted advice.  Well, i say, leave smokers alone.. its already NOT fun in these colder climates, to be forced outside to have a ciggy.. what is going to be next?..a complete ban on smoking?

As a smoker.. and a mother to several..well.. when i smoked, i never smoked inside my home, and they have grown up virtually tobacco free.. i did that, willingly, for my offspring..and to also keep my house from yellowing and becoming smelly.

Tobacco companies must currently be scrambling around and trying to find ways to keep their customers, or to bring back some, or most of those that they have lost over the last three or four years. For example..Camel is now selling a product called Snus.. that is a smokeless tobacco product that can be used anywhere that smoking is banned, and still delivers the same amount of nicotine. Other manufacturers are also creating their own versions of Snus.
http://abcnews.go.com/Health/story?id=2099026&page=1

i quit... for health reasons, and also partly because i could that what is happening now.. would soon likely happen. Aside from my "dessert" cigs, that i enjoyed, as i slowly spared out the packs..i also made my own cigs, with a lil machine thing, that would stuff the tobacco down into premade empty cig fiter tubes. Doing that, i was able to keep my costs down to a reasonable cost, but with each tax increase on tobbacco products.. up would also go the cost of my loose tobacco pouches and empty tubes. i figured i eventually wouldnt be able to afford to even make them.. so the time was right to quit.

As for what Aneirin said... well i don't agree.. personally i have always been somewhat heavy.. smoking never made me lose weight, and quitting didn't make me pack on additional pounds.

Anyways... i was sad to see that a product i had enjoyed be discontinued, but such is the way with many products companies make.. they suddenly think they have a new and better recipe..and wham..there goes my long time favorites. I couldn't do anything to keep Camel making their exotic blends, anymore then i could prevent Doritos from ruining their chips way back in the 80's..with their new "nacho cheesier" crap recipe.

Aneirin -> RE: Obama to sign anti-smoking bill (6/23/2009 12:18:15 AM)

Snus, yeah, well, as far as the Swedish version of the stuff is concerned, I have tried that, it  smells awful, like ammonia, a soggy gob of  tobbacco, and that is before you put in your mouth. In Sweden it is a problem, the snus when no longer wanted is spat out and it usual to see brown stained yuck on the sidewalk, a stain that dyes what it touches for a good while. The other thing of course is the cumulative affects of snus, a  relative is a snusser, never mind smoking secretly, he is a secret snusser and is always getting it in the neck for using the stuff, it leading to the highest instances of mouth cancer. A secret snusser cazn always be seen, as they go quiet and take on the appearance of a hamster, with their face contorted whilst absorbing a gob of snus.

pahunkboy -> RE: Obama to sign anti-smoking bill (6/23/2009 5:30:32 AM)

This past January- my exes father passed away.  He suffered from lung cancer.   He was the picture of life and his career- was music.

He never smoked.

../    switch to chewing tobacco.  I don't want to smell the cig smoke.   Nor do I want to smell burn barrels- fire pits. or colognes.   I guess I am a bitch.

Not everyone has good lungs- and asma- and allergies are not fun.   so.. the concern only carries so far.  (IMO)

As Brian used to say- smoking is like taking a shit on the living room floor.

He is right.

When someone starts in on me about how unhealthy cigeretts are I point out something even more unhealthy.... sticking your nose into other peoples business.

Termyn8or -> RE: Obama to sign anti-smoking bill (6/23/2009 7:47:30 PM)

Actually if you gain weight because you quit smoking, the underlying cause is actually an OCD.

Fight that logic if you care to.

suhlut -> RE: Obama to sign anti-smoking bill (6/23/2009 9:17:18 PM)

i don't know T.. about that.. the way i have always understood it.. sometimes when people quit.. they can still hold onto the habit of the "hand to mouth" action. (Meaning bringing the cig over and over towards ones own lips)

Well, sometimes people cant break that habit, and they switch the hand to mouth with a cig, to hand to mouth with food. All that extra food = extra calories = extra weight.

Back in Aug, when i quit, i used patches to help me stop smoking.
During the months that i used the patch to keep my nicotine level up.. well..i,at the same time.. used that time.. to do what i was sposed to do.. i worked on breaking my habits.. One of those habits i broke and worked around was the hand to mouth thing.. I also worked on breaking trigger points (times when i'd usually smoke, example.. after dinner cig)
Aside from that.. the patches did their own work in gently lowering my need for nicotine..and so.. there came a point when i knew i no longer needed the patches.. and i never used any of my final lowest level patches.. i just knew i wasn't addicted anymore.

Lots of people think that patches, gum...or the various meds created.. will be a magic lucky button that will suddenly stop them from wanting or needing to smoke.
And thats just not true, there is plenty of work needed to be done.. while being assisted with the product.

My sister, for example.. recently claimed to want to quit also, and so, she used the patches. I called her each night.. and would learn that she was smoking while wearing the patch.. I had explained the correct way to use them, and explained the work she needed to do while wearing them, and so, still smoking while wearing a patch.. i asked her what exactly good she was doing.. absolutely none. i explained that the patch isn't a magic wand that will make her suddenly NOT a smoker.. but i don't think she believed me. i was right, in guessing that shed soon stop wearing the patch.

suhlut -> RE: Obama to sign anti-smoking bill (6/23/2009 9:27:40 PM)

pahunkboy,
my mother in law, and i were talking about this very subject today..

She made statements to the effect that she doesnt really believe smoking will cause cancer... otherwise ,she thinks.. everyone would develop cancer.

She DOES believe though, that smoking causes damage..to the lungs.. which, of course is true. She has had many family members die from the effects of being smokers.. none of them had cancer.. but..they couldn't breath..and complications from the damage to their lungs caused them to die.

As for me.. well in reply.. i suggested that i think every man woman and child is born with the possibility of developing cancer. Something triggers the gene.. or cell.. at some point in time, and it becomes activated. In some, nothing ever triggers the start of cancer growth, but in others it does.

Smoking cigs could very well be such a trigger.. but so could environmental pollution.. or a million of other possible triggers.

SO.. it is a good theory.. for how your friends father developed lung cancer, even though he never smoked. Something else triggered the cancer..and it developed.

suhlut -> RE: Obama to sign anti-smoking bill (6/23/2009 9:39:41 PM)

lol Aneirin.. the hampster image in my mind.. lol..way to funny.

Anyways.. snus.. the ones from Sweden.. are they lil packets that are placed inside cheek and /or lower lip?

in my imagination.. i likened it sorta to the idea of a piece of gum in regards to the ease of removing the packet, and disposing. Spitting it into a napkin, before flushing or tossing in wastebasket. Why are the swedish spitting them out whole.. and making such a stain mess?

The way you describe the product.. it doesnt sound any neater, nor any more discreet, when compared to the mess and obvious usage of chew.

i kinda thought Snus might be a nice lil packet that hides prettily..and invisably inside a cheek.. and then disposed of neatly.. rather then how it looks to see a person using chew.. big fat buldge in mouth..and then needing to spit. So.. HOW is snus any different?

pahunkboy -> RE: Obama to sign anti-smoking bill (6/24/2009 9:50:59 AM)

Suh-  there is more cancer then there should be.  In the  4 county area- 200,000 people and we opened a cancer center.  So come on now.

It is anyone's guess as to what is doing it.

Tho I am 1000% sure that my buddy cigs and pills, were such a strain on his heart- his organs and his neuro system that it helped in making his death probable.   and sooner.

..it sort of also boils down to fake science too.
