where can i find someone to teach me to give head well? ok im joking, but i figured that would grab some of yalls attention.

at the ripe old age of 47, i have decided that, while i am comfy being insane, i would like to find a professional to talk about some of the things that go on in my mind. i have no desire to find one who is crazier than i am, which is my only experience in this, from years and years ago.

so realizing insurance plays a big part in the choices, any advice on where and/or how to get referrals, do a "meet and greet" to see if their voice makes me wanna kill, blah blah blah.

What I have done in the past is google what you are looking for be it counselors, physiologists... in the city you are in, then read there bio. If you like them then you can phone and ask about fees, insuance and when they are booking. I hope this helps, I know it is basic but it worked out well for me.

I don't know how it works in the US, but in Canada my advice would be to ask your Doctor to refer you to somebody. Most doctors have a network of specialists they know and trust, and presumably they would take the same insurance as the referring doctor.

Also medical schools/university hospitals are good resources.
If you don't mesh with one you should be able to find one you will mesh with.

If you have a basic idea what your issues might be it may help to narrow down the search.
(for example if you know you have issues related to past traumas)

Therapists come in all shapes and sizes. From social workers to clinically trained psychologists. Myself, I prefer the latter. Part of their training is to undergo therapy themselves, and their education and hospital training means they have a much wider range of knowledge and experience. You're more likely to get bad advice from a social worker than a psychologist with a PhD. Beyond that, call up and talk to them and see if you like the feel.

Because you need to click with them to do effective work. And congratulations, this is the hardest thing you will ever do and the most important.

Finding a therapist that you can work with successfully can be hard work. All have given some good ideas so far. Personally, I think talking with one on the phone for a bit about why/what you are seeking a therapist for should give a decent foundation of whether you can talk with them. Don't ever forget that you can and SHOULD change therapists if you feel you are getting nothing from the one you are currently seeing at that time. It can take meeting with several different therapists to find one that you click with.

thanks again for the replies. after spending an hour or so researching on line, i have decided to call the nurse practitioner i see as my primary and see if she knows anyone who would "get" my humor and personality as well as she does.

if that fails, there are about 50 choices within a 10 mile radius of me. ill go through them one at a time if i have to-lol.

im going to spend some time this weekend trying to figure out if i need an md or a phd. i already started some anti anxiety meds my dr gave me, so i dont need an md to give me an rx, but i wonder if an md would be more accepting of better living through pharmacuticals.

insanity......so many decisions and so much work-lol. im blaming it on having the summer off and an idle mind.
