ORIGINAL: barelynangel Just out of curiosity -- someone posed a comment which i thought was correct -- this guy is using federal currency which has a specific value, how is he going to make more than $0.10 on a U.S. Dime, he can't melt it right, that is against the law correct? distroying any federal currency is, i thought. As long as they continue to trade it as a piece of precious metal with 90% silver content and then factor the value based on its 90% of its weight times the prevailing price for silver they could theoretically trade it in that form forever. This does not take into account the potential collector's value of a very old dime, in this case or maybe a silver table setting. It could exceed the value of the silver in it very easily. It would also cost money to melt it down and refine it so that is another disincentive to melt it down. The only real reason or need to melt it down would be to make something else out of it like jewelry, say.
