LadyEllen -> online off its head? (6/14/2009 8:07:24 AM)

my internet and email have been playing up; I have a cable modem which is connected to a four-way router box which then goes to the PC. (the other connections are used by my offspring, but theyre not here to use them today).

anyway, the email stopped working and then the internet - couldnt find the server or some such. I rebooted but got the same. I checked network connections - aok, all connected and operational, but no email or internet.

so, I unplugged the four way router from the power. I got a message that there was a network cable unplugged (as expected) - but (and here's the weird bit) I now have operational email and internet with the cable modem plugged into the router which is switched off and connected in turn to the PC.

can anyone explain this curious set of circumstances?

E

ghosts ?

Vengefull ISP ?

possibly there is a fault with the router , even turned of it may be providing a connection between the internet box and the PC , try taking it out of the equation i.e. plugging the net straight into the PC . if you continue to have no problems it may be a router issue . if you get occasionaly problems simular to when the router was turned on id go with ghosts

Whether you use a Router, Switch (not the bdsm kind), or unmanaged Hub, any or all of these devices can occasionally require a re-boot just like your computer. Mine (switch) acts up in bursts where I might have to re-boot it daily for a week, and then it will be good for a month or more before it needs it again. It's nothing to worry about. When it happens again, just power it down wait a couple seconds and turn it back on.

To me it sounds like an IP conflict occured. Hubs are not the best to use, and I would recommend getting a small switch instead of the hub. I have had hubs go bad (not sure what the hell was wrong with them) at many clients that I do work for. If I even run a switch off the four port wireless DSL routher I have, sometime one of the computers will not be able to get the internet, or see the network.

Hiya Lady E.,

Sometimes the problem is the server- not your set up.   You should see the wires here. My how life gets easier and easier.  ;-0

Internet, doesn't it just show how fragile a communication life we all lead, face it, anything could go wrong and all those businesses that depend on it, I sure hope they have a more solid back up system in place.

Generall when things go wacky for me, I not only reboot the router but also at the same time the modem, if that doesnt fix it I go for a direct plug in to the computer, when that fails its a call to the cable company.
When I was in nyc I went through 3 months of this. Turns out the hardware on the roof was bad, which several techs told me was fixed.  The cable to the tv was fine, the phone and internet was what was going out.  Turned out the techs that said hardware on the roof was replaced were full of shit.  It took 2 supervisors to track it down and even then I insisted on going up so I could see that it was all new....finally the end of the problems.

Of course with so many problems we paid very little for cable that summer, we had almost more credits that charges, as I made a point to call each time so they knew when it was out.
