I have an old brass key chain ornament that says City Of Champions that I got in 1980 after the Pirates won the Series in Fall 79 and then the Steelers won the SB a few months later. I'll have to dig that out. Go Pens.

Sometimes you just gotta believe.

The best description I have heard is that this was a victory
of determination and belief over talent.  And it certainly does
set up a great rivalry for the next few years.  Good for the
city and good for hockey.

PENGUINS, PENGUINS, PENGUINS, PENGUINS!!!!!!!!!!

I like Detroit but I really wanted the Penguins to win. And I agree with the description that Outlier stated; it really was belief and determination that won it for Pittsburgh.

Poor Marian Hossa. As a Pen last year his team lost in the finals to the Red Wings. Then he jumps ship to the Red Wings as a free agent thinking that would enhance his chances of being on a Stanley Cup champion team... only to watch his former teammates celebrate the victory on his now home ice. That's gotta sting.

Rainfire -> RE: Stanley Cup Winners (6/13/2009 12:56:02 PM)

[sm=dunno.gif]  Maybe it will teach him a little loyalty to a team, rather than just looking at it as a paycheque.

Besides, isn't hockey all about the pain?   (Or so I'm told, monster #3 plays in a league!)  [:D]

I am sad that the Red Wings lost, my town really needed a boost...  It was a damn strange series, with some seriously uneven playing by both teams.  LOTS of determination, though, and the Penguins played really well last night.  So HUZZAH for them!

I kept trying to think of something nice to say that wouldn't sound like I'm a sore loser.  I believe you summed it up quite nicely.  So, if you don't mind, I second your post. [;)]   Congratulations Penguins!!

As always Lady Hib, very classy:) The wings are formidable opponents. The games were great if a little unusual,, but damn entertaining and breathtaking at times, I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Outlier, Pens talent went a long way too:) yeah ok Im biased, lol

Ha Ha Marian Hossa got hosed.

outlier -> RE: Stanley Cup Winners (6/13/2009 6:18:20 PM)

Ah, come on Lucy, you know what I meant.

Obviously no team gets to the finals in any major sport
without talent. I was saying that I thought it was the
best comment I had heard because it put the emphasis
on the character of the Pens.

I heard someone else called it: "will over skill". All it means
is that before the finals most people gave the advantage to
the Wings. But The Pens believed in themselves and each other.
Good for them and as I said; Good for Hockey.

I was rooting for the Pens, but still, I'm sorry you guys got hosed. I don't know what the hell got into the Detroits last night; valium comes to mind. I remember thinking in the last couple of minutes of the 2nd period, when the Wings were buzzing like wasps, "well, good morning, Red Wings! How nice of you to join us!" I was expecting a rockin' 3rd, but apparently the Wings spent the intermission changing back into their pajamas.

Not sure what the heck happened, but you Motor City fans deserved a lot better than that.

I thought you did, but I didn't think you would
mind having your happy thread bumped.

Now I hope that The Lakers learn from this and
do not wait until they get back home to put away
The Magic. That series could be 2-2 or 3-1 in the
Magic's favor, with just a couple of small changes.

It was a wacky series!  That 5-0 shutout, WTF??  Where were the Pens that night, their goalies seemed to be asleep, or blindfolded, when they nailed us the two previous games.   A Mystery.

No team gets to the playoffs without being a damn fine team.  One factor that kept us down---the Wings are a freakin OLD team!  Srsly, their average age is 35!  Now, I remember being 35, and I know that it was a lot slower than being 25, and that was slower than being 20!   When the Wings got that goal in the final game, I was thrilled, it felt like a miracle.

I'm looking forward to next year. [:)]

Ah. That explains it. I was wondering why you're no longer playing in the NHL, but I didn't think it would be polite to ask.

CatdeMedici -> RE: Stanley Cup Winners (6/14/2009 5:49:37 AM)

You are all very very welcome, I hope you celebrate to the max! The Canes thought it over long and hard and decided that those two teams needed a chance....[8|]
