Of course I believe that Iran (and any other nation) ONLY wants nuclear power for civilian energy purposes.

Since the disposal of nuclear waste is so problematic, safety concerns so prominent, and since Iran only wants a non-petroleum energy source, why aren't they doing as Pres. Obabma wants us to promote, on wind and solar energy? Certainly, being a desert nation, they have ideal locations for both?

Where is the clear message, "Renewable Energy for Iran!"?

You really believe that huh? Let Me send you the craigslist info on My swamp land that's for sale.[8|]

for the planet to handle 6 bln people we need nuclear.    Simple.

They want to build a new nuke plant in Berwick- an hour from my house.  I support it.

(I just re-read what I wrote....and I'm pretty sure it's at best....rambling....)

You suggest (it's fairly clear) that Iran should not have nuclear power.

And maybe they shouldn't.

Should they not have the ability to feed their citizens with "normal" levels of power?

Have you seen the way they (the average Iranian citizens) live?

I spent a great deal of my youth thinking that the way I lived was special....that we alone had the right to vote.  Americans were exceptional....or so I thought....

I watched all the news...kids today know better....I thought we were unique.

I didn't know that communist countries could vote.

I thought that everyone else but me....and my fellow citizens....and all of Canada....couldn't vote.

Okay....fine.....I'm rambling now.....

(I just checked....it's a fact....I'm rambling....)

That's not a simple question.

purepleasure -> RE: Just a simple question about energy... (6/5/2009 7:40:38 PM)

I support renewable energy sources, such as wind, and biofuels.  However, I do not support nuclear energy.  Remember Chernobyl and Three Mile Island?  Sorry, but a nuclear meltdown is something I don't want to have to worry about.

Joseff -> RE: Just a simple question about energy... (6/5/2009 8:23:49 PM)

Iran is sitting on a huge oil reserve, they don't need nuclear for power. They want to build a nuclear arsonal and destroy Isreal. Don't believe it? Google Achmedemejad's (I know, spelling) speeches. He has stated dozens of times that his intention is to wipe Isreal off the face of the earth. Oh, and how many people have died in nuclear energy accidents, as opposed to oil production, or coal mining. The reason nobody is using wind and solar right now is that the techknology just isn't advanced enough yet. We either have to use fossil fuels or nuclear untill that happens. Oh, and those communist countries that vote, must be nice, what with only one candidate on the ballot.

Like most people, you dont understand relative risk.

samboct -> RE: Just a simple question about energy... (6/5/2009 9:14:04 PM)

I heard an interesting talk by Amory Lovins who pointed out that all the countries looking to acquire nuclear technology are also countries where the state department has flagged as being havens for terrorists or having dictatorships inimical to US interests.  (I guess this is a bit different from having dictatorships that are supportive of US interests.)

If a country isn't trying to develop nuclear power plants, then it's a lot easier to look for things like enriched plutonium or uranium.  Basically, the stuff isn't all that useful other than for building bombs -and nuclear power plants.

Seems to me our options are we develop renewables so that they're economically competitive with fossil fuel sources, or we increase the risk of nuclear terrorism.  I must admit, I like the former approach- and I still tend to think that the big secret is that renewables are going to be less expensive in a decade or so than the current methods of power generation.  And nuclear isn't as cheap as you think- the economics have been jiggery pokery'd- just like the past decade that our banking system was providing 30% of our GDP.

.....well, as we know from history, having nuclear weapons and using them are two entirely different things. Deterrence. Having a nuke means that ground forces tend not to wander accidentally into your country and your air space tends to be respected.
It also means you get to commit any number of huamn rights violations and, again, no-one really wants to do anything about it.
You get to invade other countries without risking getting invaded by third party countries, and you get to be a player in world politics.
If the worlds remaining super power says you're a rogue nation. If they have a bit of a reputation for invading countries in order to promote regime change........then a nuke looks like a pretty good investment.
Still doesn't mean you'd use it.......because once you do all bets are off and chances are the people you'd use it against (or their friends) have more nukes than you and your country would look pretty silly as a big sheet of glass.

Do you really think that Kim worries about such things? I am not so sure that his megalomania isn't so far gone that he doesn't think the people would welcome the chance to be evaporated for him.

You might talk first with those in the U.S. who want more nuclear power plants, starting with Sen. McCain.

He said "Israel should cease to exist", not that he'd wipe them off the face of the earth.  It was a mis-interpretation/misquote.

Heard it from a translator on NPR.  And I'm no great fan of Ahmadinejad's.

Technically you could make the case that the US doesn't need nuclear power.  We import a lot of oil, have our own reserves, have coal reserves, and could make greater use of renewable power sources.  Nuclear only provides 20% of our power.

servantforuse -> RE: Just a simple question about energy... (6/6/2009 11:31:48 AM)

Nuclear energy supplies France with 75 % of its energy needs. It is the only way to go. Iran couldn't care less about energy for its population. They are intent on distroying Isreal and have said so many times...

keyword:  risk

more risk than I'm willing to take, tyvm.  and i guess it's not relative unless it's happening in "your neighborhood"

Irishknight -> RE: Just a simple question about energy... (6/6/2009 4:06:12 PM)

There is more risk from a coal plant and more damage to the environment from a coal plant than from a nuclear plant.  I've lived near both and I've worked at both.
I believe that both types should be replaced by solar, wind, tidal and any other type of clean power.  The unpopular truth is that nuclear is cleaner than conventional power generation.

The cold hearted side of me says that we let them have Chernobyl style reactors and help them build them.  We push one button and solve a problem by wiping out extremists in Iran and curbing their desire for anything nuclear.

PanthersMom -> RE: Just a simple question about energy... (6/6/2009 4:11:18 PM)

i see no reason for nuclear energy or weapons.  there are alternatives to both that have much less risk involved and reduced consequences should something happen that places the population at risk of harm.  we should have been developing them all along and living in harmony with our earth instead of finding new and more "impressive" ways to destroy it.

IrishKnight... That's true ONLY if nothing goes wrong. Of course, you could ask some of the folks within a 50 mile radius of Chernobyl what they think of the idea of several nuke plants in every city across the globe...
