This made me smile. My clients who have been in our local juvenile detention, county jail and various prisons around the state...all, every single one of them, say juvie is the worst in terms of freedom to do your own thing.
A few juvie rules:
- are not allowed to look anyone directly in the eye;
- must walk on the desiginated path inside and out of the facility;
- hands must be kept in a diamond pattern behind their back (thumbs and forefingers form a diamond) when they are not in their cell or eating;
- they must ask and receive permission to enter through a doorway;
- they must ask and receive permission to move hands out of the diamond pattern (Sir, may I itch my nose, Sir?);
- forced PE;
- required to wear the UGLIEST sneakers you've ever seen (this one really bothers me); and
- required to memorize and be able to recite facility rules/regulations--there's maybe 15-20 of them.
When they are headed down that path I am quick to warn them it's not like Juvies on MTV. At least around here...prison has the most freedom, then county, and juvie is a far distant third.
Hmmm perhaps some ideas in there....
