Status: offline 		I'm hoping someone can be of assistance on this topic. I was asked to provide information on the Serbian culture and it's approach to submission where women are concerned. I'm uncertain of the woman's role in this society and would sincerely appreciate any feedback I can receive. Also, if you are aware of lifestyle resources in this area that would be great too. Thank you in advance.

This accords with my memories of visits there. I wouldn't refer to Serbian women as submissive, but downtrodden. You have to have something in order to choose to forego using it or turn it over to someone else. They don't have it.

Status: offline 		All I know of Serbians (and ex-Yugo's in general) is they are the toughest people on the planet!

Nobody could resist, foreign aggression like these people. Nobody. Even the Germans couldn't defeat them. Nor the Russians. Nor Nato.

If that national culture extends to their women, I can imagine them as the nation of Domina's from Hell ...

Status: offline 		There is a strong pro-Serb bias here. How many wars has Serbia won? Oh yes, quite a few against defenseless civilians!

Status: offline 		roland, how you could possibly view our posts as pro Serb I don't know, especially mine. Yugoslavia was an amazing nation as long as Tito kept down all nationalism, especially in Serbia. But as he never planned for a future without him, it fell apart immediately afterwards. However Serbia was not all of Yugoslavia.

Status: offline 		Woo - we are getting tetchily political here. Maybe it's best to stick to the brief of the OP, answer if you actually know something about serbian women, or otherwise avoid stirring the hornets nest of Balkan politics. No more Gavrilo Princip's please :)
For the record, I'm with DesFIP - there's a big difference between consensual submission in a BDSM context, and the low status, choice free subjugation of women in some societies.

Heh, much to my dismay.... "some societies" would include women in the THIS society (US) all the way up to mid 80's depending on how you count. Reading the laws and customs around "consensual marriages" in the good ol US of A makes me cringe.

Well, from what I know of Serbian women, they are strong of heart, dedicated to their families and the ones they love. Don't cross them cause they'll fight as hard as they love and they DO love hard. The Serbian women I know are resiliant. They accept loss and hold their heads high. They celebrate with passion.

The Serbian women I know have definitely been submissive - but don't ever presume that because of that they are somehow people to walk over.

One Serbian woman that I have had the honor and privilege of knowing, in her younger years, faced off a man who had broken into her house with the intention of raping her while her husband wasn't home. She beat him over the head with a frying pan until he ran away. Then she took that same frying pan and calmly made her husband's dinner. That night as her child was upstairs doing his homework and she was cleaning up after dinner, she remarked to her husband what had happened. Then, without a pause, she calmly handed him his coat and hat as he storned out of the house.

He found the man who had nearly raped his wife (it was a neighbor of theirs) and in front of the police, beat him to a pulp in front of HIS wife, letting her know exactly why he was doing that. The police bought him a shot and a beer and sent him home. His wife kissed him as he walked in the door and went to make his lunch for work the next day.

That same Serbian woman, entertained police in her home with dinner and some of the best known deserts in the neighborhood as they sat waiting to intercept the phone calls that were going to be coming in one afternoon. Her husband had a side "job" as a bookie and they were trying to get information on him. She asked after their wives and their children and then sent her son to turn on the front lights. The lights were connected to the phones. When the lights went on, the phones went off. At the end of their shift, she sent food home to the officer's families and waved bye with a smile.

The Serbian woman I know had a soft heart and a strong body. She was my best friend. She was the one person I have always tried to model my life after. She died back in 1986.

She was my grandmother.

Your grandmother sounds like quite a woman, you were lucky to have her in your life.  But I'm sure you already know that.
