Might be a good idea to stock pile money. lol
Personally, buying ready made meals doesnt strike me as a savvy idea. I think dried food such as powdered milk and such is a pretty good thing.
I dont know. Im pretty moderate so havent come to the conclusion I need guns as of yet.

LDS folk do what is called Food Storage. It isn't strange to find every even small apartment have a good Closet Sized place for foor storage.

Larger Familes have homes which have whole rooms dedicated to food storage. From Water to Grain and canned foods no matter what most Mormon familes have enough food to last 6 months to a Year or more with rationing should something drastic happen.

Do you history it is actually a GOOD IDEA.

If you do nothing else when you go shopping but an extra Meal you do not plan on eating. Get Pasta and Canned or Jared Pasta Sauce. Get Canned Meat Products and If you can afford it a SMALL chest frezer when you can store MEATS in storing anything else in it sort of defeats the purpose.

If you know Hunters offer to Buy the Low Quality Roasts off them for 5 bucks a roast they will usually sell it for that. Then Build up the Staples. FRUITS are the most forgotten staple you shoul have plenty of them. Breads should be kept to a minimum and you should invest in a bread maker or HIGH Quality Bread Pans and LEARN HOW TO BAKE BREAD, It will come in handy when the grain is scarse. Any special Drinks you like should be kept to Powder Added Kind Soda has a shelf life but Crystal Light doesn't. Start buying Rice and Grain by the SACK and get good sturdy Food Grade Containers and keep them sealed.

This is just GOOD PRACTICE who cares if there is an economic scare or not what about just someone getting hurt and stopping Income into the home, someone getting killed in an auto accident. If you Plan for the Worst you will usually come out the best.

One thing I think every family should learn how to do is grow Produce. Tomatoes can be grown from a hanging plant and they can be needed nutrients when needed. Potatoes are also good but require mot attention and more space to grow. Stay away from Corn and things as they take more care than most understand and if done wrong can screw up the soil for other plantings.

Learn how to Jar your own food and learn about Sterilizing. Try to cut a little meat out of your meals every month untill the maximum amount of meat you eat is equal to a deck of cards and then limit that to once or twice a week, if you are not a hunter Meat can be a limited comodity.

The above is not survival mode it is just planning and learning how to protect yourself and manage to feed yourselves even when money is a major issue.

I stockpile but for a different reason. When I find a bargain on non-perishables, I stockpile like crazy. The only problem with doing this is that you have to manage stuff really well, or you spent your money for naught. First in, first out, rotating stock. the LDS folks dont just fill a closet or a room and wait for a disaster. It is a working facility that they are constantly using and replenishing. They also have a 72 hour kit in their house. That seems more important to me. You can find them by googling them.

Pfft, I always buy food on sale, have a big chest freezer, always have at least one spare 25lb bag of rice, flour and sugar, a couple cases of the vietnamese instant noodle bowls (in the reusable bowls, comes with little tiny forks too, they're so cute!), canned goods galore, tea bags (I don't care how bad it gets, I'm having my sweet tea). Also have a couple hunting rifles and plenty of ammo, and we each (except the pet) have our own handgun (gay men living in utah, I'm not militant, but I'm not stupid either).

It's not because I'm sitting here thinking "Oh god, the appocolypse is nigh!", I couldn't care less. Like a good scout, I'm always prepared. It's because, frankly, I grew up poor, and that's how I learned to shop. I also work in food, have since I was too young to actually have a job, so I blame that for my shopping and stocking habits as well.

           Aside from keeping a well-stocked pantry as a habit, and maintaining a certain emergency supply as an eartquake kit, I pretty much rely on these "suburban survivalists" should the shit ever really hit the fan.

         I will head out to one of a few good locations I know, wait for one to come along with his tens of thousands of $ worth of supplies, in his uber-capable off-road vehicle, and I will shoot him in the head, and take it all.

      The end of the world is not the time to be polite.

Personally I don't keep any kind of survivalist kit, I don't stock up on food or anything like that.

If the end of the world happens I wanna be among the dead, not living in a catastrophic world and suffering for a few months when I'll probably die anyway.

As for a depression type crisis, I'll just move back where I grew up where everyone still farms and people rarely want for food and their idea of running water is a hose running from the creek into their homes.

Yep. I've done a 180 on this (and gun ownership, too, fwiw) since watching what happened during Katrina.
