I avoid both sites.  I am in them, but under a fake name.     myspace takes too long to load- and I seldom like the music. to view a profile is testy.

I never found the button one twitter and I am signed up on it 2x.

The social network sites dont hit a must have site- to me.   This board is good.  Adults - .. and brains, fun but not a chat room.

I have a HUGE distrust of facebook and myspace.

No offense, but you seem to be a bit of a conspiracy theorist type who is distrusting of the "Establishment" and the like.  Personally, I don't have that much to hide, and don't worry much about the government seeing what I'm doing.  Might be because I worked for the government in past so I'm part of "them."

I use MySpace exclusively for watching what my son is posting.  Just his knowing that his dad and I check it on an random regular basis is enough for him to watch what he is doing.

The "I'm tired, going to bed" "drunk off my ass and puking" shit I just can't deal with.  But I am finding the ability to stay in contact with the friends that I'm not able to see regularly is nice.  Interestingly enough, someone on one of my closest friends "network" saw my stuff on her page and now wants to meet me.  Have to see how that goes.....

Fitznicely pretty much covered it.

Status Update:
This feature is accessible on your Home page.  You access your Home page two ways.  When you sign in using your username and password it's the page that pops up by default or by clicking Home button located in the dark blue bar at the top of every page on the left side. Underneath that blue bar, there is a text box in a shaded rectangle at the top of the page that says "Write Something" and has a clickable button that says "share" directly to the right.

That makes complete sense.  I thought it was just posting it on the wall.  I kind of figured the "thread concept" out based on appearance.  Funny thing about the status is that someone I know who has been behaving incredibly horrible and is now facing the consequences of her actions posted some "waa, waa, poor me" message.  I didn't want to comment, but I did want to say something, so I put on my wall how childish temper tantrums and lies will always catch up with you and sometimes it is time to look in the mirror to discover your own responsibility for what's going on.  It really pissed her off.  I admit it was my intent to virtually bitch slap her a bit, but didn't want it going on the "comments"  When she sent me a message telling me not to write things in her "honesty box" I got all kinds of confused thinking somehow I had commented when I didn't mean to.  That pretty much prompted the question.

.
WALL TO WALL:
By clicking on a  friend's name or picture, you are brought to their home page.  Here, by clicking share when you write in the text box that says "write something",  it get's pinned to your friend's home page.  Again becoming an opening post in a thread that anyone can comment on.  Many people don't realize that they should click the comment button underneath the post they are commenting on and instead reply to  a comment by typing in the "write something" box.  This would be like me creating a whole new thread to answer your facebook question instead of replying to it here, inside your thread.

So basically if I do it from someone else's home page, I'm posting on their wall, and if I do it on my own, it is my status?

As far as the notifications and cupcakes and all that, I changed my settings so none of those show up on my page.  It's annoying as crap!

Must check privacy settings and figure out how to do that.  I have this one friend, she is really very nice, but she is constantly doing that stuff.  She's one of those people who will also send tons of "chain texts" to your cell.  Makes me freaking nuts.

What exactly is twitter anyway?
I hear that name on the News ocaisionally.

It's a place online for self absorbed narcissists to document their actions and thoughts for all the world to absorb.

However This is it's one redeeming value.

It's Facebook lite. Facebook is myspace without all the themes and graphics and personalization.

It goes like this:

Myspace was basically the first of the three, you could set themes (different backgrounds and colors), add videos, pics, etc. You could even have music that played when your page was visited.

Facebook was the new, streamlined myspace. No themes or music, but you can have your pics and a 'wall' that lets you post comments that your friends can see on their walls when they log in. Kinda like a giant message board with pics.

Twitter is the new Facebook, but with even less to offer. It kept the "wall" feature and ditched the rest.

Hello Shore -
I wanted to add a serious thing here about twitter's redeeming value.  It is being used by Emergency Response teams to alert responderss of where they are needed in the event of a disaster.  Also, it is used by volunteer organizations to contact people about days of service, ways to help.

It's not all narcissistic!

best,
sunshine

ETA:  I just read all the tweets on that link you put in your post.  Ohhh heavens I haven't laughed that hard in a long time.  That is fabulous!  Thank you for sharing.

There are some decent books on Facebook that explain everything in detail along with screenshots. My favorite is by Dave Awl and called Facebook Me! The info in it is solid and the tone is delightfully snarky. I think Awl's book is much more helpful than the Facebook so-called Help.

I lurves my facebook page, and with family all over the country and overseas as well, it is a lifesaver (between the status updates, chat, and opportunity to play little games together). Of course, I had one for a -year- before I learned to use it... and then I had to have a 16-year-old walk me through it. *LOL* But now, I play games, chat with family members and friends, and generally make a nuisance of myself. *grins*

I have FB and enjoy it but the stupid game invitations are very annoying!
I have it set so only my "Friend's" can view my page and I don't have personal info listed.
Just random BS but it's a great way to find old friend's & keep up w/my daughter!

I joined Twitter, just to post once... all I said was "I don't fucking CARE about your shit"
Somehow, the post failed. I deleted My account. Waste of time.

I use Facebook daily.  My security settings are set so that only those on my friends lists can see anything in my account.  I have also blocked all the silliness on there (cookie tosses, etc.).  I like it.  It's a great way to get quick updates as to how far away friends & family are doing.  I became reacquainted with high school friends through there, as well as former co-workers, and even my childhood best friend.  It's a great way to photo-share with others, too.

I'm not paranoid about it.  I don't put anything out there that I would be upset about the world knowing.

Hm, might be kinda cool to get everyone together from here on facebook too.  I use it, have to admit I like it.  I used it more in a week than I did my 4 or 5 live journal accounts over a period of 7 years.  I hated LJ.

Anyway, if anyone wants my facebook thing, just drop me a cm :)

Exactly what Nueva said. I use facebook for social networking, my business, keeping in touch with college friends, and my scattered military family. I keep my settings to friends only and keep my page interesting, varied and I really enjoy it.

I've been on Facebook for a few months now.  It's a convenient way to keep up with scattered family.  The most important discovery was the "hide" button that appears when you roll the cursor at the top right corner of the annoying game/crap announcements.

As of today, Facebook will automatically index all your info on Google, which allows everyone to view it. To change this option, go to Settings --> Privacy Settings --> Search --> then UN-CLICK the box that says 'Allow indexing'. Facebook kept this one quiet. Copy and paste onto your status for all your friends.
