LafayetteLady -> FaceBook (5/21/2009 9:38:04 PM)

I admit, I'm not terribly tech savvy.  Recently I have joined the ranks of MySpace and Facebook.  MySpace primarily to keep an eye on what my son is doing.  Facebook because I have a couple of friends that this is the easiest way for us to keep in touch with our schedules.

I am soooo not understanding how Facebook works and have found their help section to be less than helpful.  Would love to hear some explanations of how this site works.

PS I will never jump over to Twitter, because I really just don't need to be THAT in touch with everyone.

popeye1250 -> RE: FaceBook (5/21/2009 10:29:32 PM)

What exactly is twitter anyway?
I hear that name on the News ocaisionally.

GreedyTop -> RE: FaceBook (5/21/2009 10:31:04 PM)

I *think* it's way to post on the site and have it texted to all the people on the list.   Not sure though....

This may help explain... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PN2HAroA12w

Facebook.....I've had a facebook page for over a year and finally had to ask a 'tween to explain it to me!

BossyShoeBitch -> RE: FaceBook (5/21/2009 10:44:06 PM)

You know how Facebook has status updates on the top of your page?  Twitter is a site where your entire profile consists of your updates.

What exactly do you want to know about facebook?

aphotic -> RE: FaceBook (5/21/2009 10:45:36 PM)

Facebook is awful. I had at least 2 people creating false accounts of my name and sending disparaging remarks to several persons. Sure that will happen from time to time; however in this case, there is no one running that "facebook ship". There is no support line to call, and the e-mail support will take forever. I closed my account and paid my attorney $3300 to subpoena their IP records along with filing a small claims lawsuit. Upon this request, they finally took down the false accounts. Myspace has far better assistance.

Pretty much anything and everything you can tell me.

I haven't figured out what my "status" is or how I change it, yet apparently I wrote something and a whole bunch of my friends were really pleased with my "status".

I get the messaging back and forth privately (about all I do get).

I'm totally confused with a friend who "flung a cupcake" at me, people sending me hearts and tattoos.

But I love how it has gotten me back in touch with my best friend from college and keeps me in touch with a friend I used to work with who is like my sister.

Most of it though is pretty confusing.  Where am I when I open?  What is wall to wall?  Seems like anything I type is on the wall, so do some people have different settings?

Really, BossyShoeBitch, I'm completely confused......

Totally don't get MySpace either.  One of my son's friends helped me make it "pretty".   Come to think of it, they are pretty much the only "friends" on my list there too.

For the couple of friends where our schedules never match to get together, I'm finding FaceBook great for keeping in touch.  But the ones that are posting every thought they have, i.e. tired today, going to bed, taking a shower...be back in a bit.....I just really don't need that kind of information, ya know?

susie -> RE: FaceBook (5/22/2009 12:55:42 AM)

I don't "get" twitter at all. I'm told I am not using it properly as I don't put "tags" on my posts. No idea what that's all about. I much prefer Facebook as it allows you to keep in touch with people. I have found some old friends on there which has been fun. The only problem  I have had with FB is that because I worked in media and some famous people on my profile I get friend requests from strangers just because of my link to the celebs on my profile.

I guess at the end of the day it is all about how you use them. One celeb friend of mine twitters about every half hour. I have no idea how she has the time for it but she currently has over 14,000 followers so guess it works for her.

pahunkboy -> RE: FaceBook (5/22/2009 2:36:00 AM)

I dont get twitter.

On facebook and myspace...   Do go there.   I am serious.    It is not a good idea to post detailed info on those 2 sites.    Just dont.

THe IAO, with its rather Omnious logo pictured above, was a combination of various DARPA research programs, all based around information gathering, were all combined together. IAO's mission swas to "imagine, develop, apply, integrate, demonstrate and transition information technologies, components and prototype, closed-loop, information systems that will counter asymmetric threats by achieving total information awareness"

one of IAO's many projects was something called the Scalable Social Network Analysis project. /snip

subrob1967 -> RE: FaceBook (5/22/2009 2:47:53 AM)

Twitter is a 140 character personal blog that you send out to your friends, and thats it. It's almost like an Instant Message with a cc: addition.

Facebook is harder to explain, but the youtube link describes better than I can.

pahunkboy -> RE: FaceBook (5/22/2009 2:50:41 AM)

so it is free text messaging?

?

Fitznicely -> RE: FaceBook (5/22/2009 3:42:41 AM)

Hunkboy: Twitter is blogging in the style of text messaging.

I hate facebook, mostly cos I avoid using my own name anywhere. I joined it under protest, but i don't actually go on there more than once a month.

The "status" is set at the top of the page, where it says "what are you thinking" or whatever.

The flinging cupcakes thing is silly games you can play. There's thousands of 'em. Basically, you "send" selected "gifts" to your friends, they send em back and the more you send, the more choices of things you get to send next time. Peurile? Oh god yes.

Wall to wall is like public IMing, where you can reply directly to other people's status updates and everyone gets to see it.

MySpace I won't touch. From what I hear it's full of terrible bands, UM's and....predators of UM's. Also, I have an allergic reaction to flashy, glittery graphics [:-]

subtlebutterfly -> RE: FaceBook (5/22/2009 4:51:00 AM)

Ugh I hate myspace!
Facebook's fine....after you've put your privacy up through the roof and put all the right people into ya even MORE limited profile section.

Twitter:
-I'm taking a dump!
-I'm on my way to the dentist!

I mean..wtf who wants to know these things about your life??? It can be cool tho.[8D] .neater than facebook in many ways.

Rainfire -> RE: FaceBook (5/22/2009 5:32:43 AM)

[&o]  I'm on Twitter. Barely. Because of an artist I follow though I really don't need to know when DV (not Diurnal Vampire but the artist) is smashed out of his head or when he's sick and puking his guts out. The man is a musical genius and incredibly talented (and good looking!) but FER CRYING OUT LOUD!!! Dude, I don't need to know that you've been drinking whiskey and vodka all night and are nucking futs DRUNK off yer ass!!

BossyShoeBitch -> RE: FaceBook (5/22/2009 6:13:51 AM)

Fitznicely pretty much covered it.

Status Update:
This feature is accessible on your Home page.  You access your Home page two ways.  When you sign in using your username and password it's the page that pops up by default or by clicking Home button located in the dark blue bar at the top of every page on the left side. Underneath that blue bar, there is a text box in a shaded rectangle at the top of the page that says "Write Something" and has a clickable button that says "share" directly to the right.

Why does everyone "like" my Status Update?
By clicking the share button, the blurb you entered appears on the profile page of each of your friends, with 2  clickable options underneath- comment    like
     By clicking comment, it takes you to that person's page, where you can write something witty and profound directly under their status update, (the status update is the OP and all comments show up indented underneath, in thread form).
    By clicking likeyou are telling the person that you read their update and wanted to give a little nod of approval.

OR:
You can choose to not do a single thing.

WALL TO WALL:
By clicking on a  friend's name or picture, you are brought to their home page.  Here, by clicking share when you write in the text box that says "write something",  it get's pinned to your friend's home page.  Again becoming an opening post in a thread that anyone can comment on.  Many people don't realize that they should click the comment button underneath the post they are commenting on and instead reply to  a comment by typing in the "write something" box.  This would be like me creating a whole new thread to answer your facebook question instead of replying to it here, inside your thread.

As far as the notifications and cupcakes and all that, I changed my settings so none of those show up on my page.  It's annoying as crap!

Crush -> RE: FaceBook (5/22/2009 8:54:49 AM)

I do all three, because my students are on all three...and I'm all on a bunch of others, like LinkedIn, that I won't get into because that would just muddy the waters more ;)

Twitter is a "Me, Me, Me" short blog post, as people above mentioned.  (Just like the Sprint commercial in the US)

But it does have some uses in business as a quick way to let a bunch of people know where you are/if the sale was made/I need XYZ ASAP/etc with a quick SMS(text message)  from your cellphone, which is what makes it nice...only one SMS and no need to log into facebook, etc., to update your status.

Social networking is now the number one use of the Internet...it now even beats porn for bandwidth!  They are all ways we try to connect with people in an increasingly connected-disconnected world (Looking around at CollarMe.)

Next we'll all geotag ourselves, with streaming video/audio and overwhelm our Reptilian Masters with excessive data feeds.

I avoid both sites.  I am in them, but under a fake name.     myspace takes too long to load- and I seldom like the music. to view a profile is testy.

I never found the button one twitter and I am signed up on it 2x.

The social network sites dont hit a must have site- to me.   This board is good.  Adults - .. and brains, fun but not a chat room.

I have a HUGE distrust of facebook and myspace.

pahunkboy -> RE: FaceBook (5/22/2009 9:39:58 AM)

BTW-  you can add in  all messenger services too.  I got tired of spending an hour to redo my settings on yahoo- many times- so the heck with it.
