Gurkhas win right to settle in UK.
All I can say is - about time!  This is huge thing, at least for me it is.

Excellent news it is a big thing for me tooo. They absolutely deserve to be able to call the UK home for their service. I have much respect for them.

It is also notable that Ms Lumley used her fame towards aiding a truly worthwhile cause.

Miss Lumley is the best, she can fight in my corner anyday.[sm=hearts.gif]

It is ridiculous that there should have been such a struggle for them over this ... typical British governmental pomposity.

Well, I can think of plenty of places for them to live.  In about 300 MP's erstwhile second homes, the greedy bar stewards.

Jonnie, kindly remind Peon that the forms are a dangerous place for one to use cockney slang...

I don't agree with it all. When the Gurkhas signed up, the deal at their end of the reward was the prestige of fighting for the British Army and a hefty pension. Living here was never part of the deal. And, as per usual, people are using it as a political football.

RCdc -> RE: Gurkhas win right to settle in UK. (5/21/2009 9:59:26 AM)

Well, apart from getting a crap pension and the fact that you disagree, the rest you posted is pretty right.  It probably was a political ballgame.

They don't fight for the british army for the prestige - that is a huge error many people make.  They fight in the British Army.  And it was unfair to seperate those before 1997, those that served in the world wars and saved the lives of countless numbers of people.
And they have more 'patriotism', respect and discipline in their little fingers than most average joes who live here.

It is a very good pension by their standards, and that is what they signed up to.

According to the Gurkhas themselves, it is a key factor.

I'm not sure how you qualify that, but assuming you're right about their patriotism, then they'll be more than happy to stay in their home country.

For once I agree with N.G. We had the same B.S. about various Vietnamese groups who our govt tried to tell us were, and I quote, "helping us."
Ah, ...they were *in their own country* fighting for their own freedom, not, "helping us."
Here we go again, why do things like this have to involve immigration to the West?

Lucylastic -> RE: Gurkhas win right to settle in UK. (5/21/2009 11:29:10 AM)

Popeye...the Ghurkas as a "group" have been serving in the British army since 1857, in separate battalions, not in their own country and not for India, altho there are obviously indian ghurkas.
These men are part of the British army and a widely respected  for their service well except by the powers that be. Until now....
All the men in my family(hubby, father, grandfathers) have been in the service and all three  respected the Ghurka roles.

have a lookie here for some history, these arent just "natives, helping the army"

You said that they fight for the British Army for the prestige.  They don't - they fight in the British Army because of the prestige.  For them, there is a big difference.  The four gurkha regiments which are under discussion were signed over to the British Army and as you have corrected yourself, part of.  They are not fighting for the british army they are it.

Because they view Britain as their home.  Many choose to settle in the UK because they have often spent more time here than in Nepal.  They may of even been granted leave to stay but when it comes to retirement, that would when the issue comes into problems.

How do I qualify my point?  Simply go talk to them.  Or go learn about how they join and why and what they have to do to be one of the 200.  It is very easy to say that it's 'what they signed up for' when you may not have knowledge of what they have to go through to be a gurkha and just what they have done for the people they fought beside.

Otherwise, it would just be another cheap slave labour issue after all.

Yeah, well, you said army and I said military, and you said British and I said English.....so, I've won!

How on earth can that be a reasonable argument? Were it the case, every man and his dog would be laying claim to a slot of land at her majesty's pleasure.

They are subject to the law like anyone else. When they signed up, there was no agreement that they would be able to by-pass the law in return for their service.

The law is there for a reason; it's there so everyone knows where they stand and can be assured of a fair crack of the whip. It has to be consistent and it has to be final, and I'm afraid fighting in/for/as part of/as a constituent part/among/along side/with (just hedging my bets here) the British Army, doesn't mean they can circumvent the rules. And, when the likes of Joanna Lumley is influencing English law, then the world really has come to something.

Yes indeed and in fact it has been known for light hearted rhyming slang to be interpreted (totally misunderstood) as highly inflamatory and controversial. The trouble is GreedyTop in fact but I doubt I will be having any bother from her for saying that!

Greedy gave you grief for using rhyming slang?  Nah - I don't believe it.  She's as soft as a blancmange!

Can they keep their knives?  Brits, last I heard, want to outlaw steak knives in the kitchen, or at least round them off.

The Vietnamese immigrants I met in Texas were a mixed bag.  Some made outstanding citizens and residents, especially those who had been in the war.  On the other hand, a lot of the gangster retards came over too and created some havoc.  But then I guess we Italians were good for that, too, for a while.

RCdc -> RE: Gurkhas win right to settle in UK. (5/21/2009 2:07:44 PM)

British is different to English.  So I won.[;)]
If you do not understand the difference, then it becomes obviously why you do not understand why they deserve to be treated like all British Soldiers, not English ones.

As for your comment about every man and his dog?  Well if they belong to 'Britain' then they should be afforded the same rights.  If you do not want them, do not call them your own. (You being a generic kinda thing).  The law can obviously be ridiculous when it comes to inequality.
