Coming soon to your hometown.

The courts here have already upheld public video surveillance, and sobriety checkpoints where you can be stopped without reasonable suspicion and have to prove you are innocent of a crime.

He was 25 years off, but it's becoming reality.

Arpig,

A woman's been given a "behave yourself or go to jail" notice by the police for being too loud in bed.

Fucking outrageous, is my considered opinion. I agree, tho, Orwell got it right.

Time to crack out the "Welcome to Airstrip One" T-shirts in time for the Tourist Season...

I have followed this story and it isn't outrageous to ask the trout to shut the F up. There have been numerous complaints and their bed hammers an adjoining wall. They shout at the top of their voices, which would piss anyone off.

Pull the bed away from the wall then gag the bitch.

'Nillas have no fucking idea. Literally.

I'm sorry, but I don't see this as Orwellian at all. The woman is disturbing the peace. If you've ever lived in an apartment building with thin walls next to someone like this, you know exactly how annoying it is. I have lived in an apartment building next to a couple like this; and they regularly got up to the Devil's business in the wee hours of the morning all during the week. Now I love sex, and I would never step in the way of another person's passion. But I like sleeping too; and if it takes calling the cops to get them to shut the fuck up, I'd do it too. Luckily, I didn't have to do that. After leaving several polite notes asking them to keep it down to no avail, I complained to the super. After he threatened to have them evicted, it finally stopped. Nothing in this article sounds intrusive to me; you don't have a right to annoy your neigbors.

It's not the woman, it's the ASBO.

This did NOT need to be handled by the Law

She wouldn't stop bothering her neighbors, so apparently it did need to be handled by the law. She was warned, and she persisted. I don't see any difference between this and neigbors that throw loud parties on a regular basis. Again, you don't have a right to continually bother your neighbors. Not one thing about this story is Orwellian in nature.

I dunno. I had paid for a hotel room and had the same problem. Security came to tell us to keep it down. I did, but the walls were so thin you could hear the people in the next room sneeze. This was an upscale boutique hotel. Perhaps the owner should invest in better buiding materials so that people could use their god given right to have good sex. This goes for the hotel and the housing in this instance. We pay for the lodging it should have adequate insulation.

I just wonder how they prove all this.  If it's all true, I agree, something should be done to stop it.  If you live in an apt building, or any other dwelling close enough where your noises keep others from sleeping at night, it has to be stopped.

But maybe after it happened a couple of times, and she got warned, she did stop.

What I'm saying is that this carries a jail term, and that's pretty serious, so how are they going to prove that she continued to be noisy after she received the first warning?  In the article she says that she didn't think she's been very loud.  Maybe a couple of neighbors just want her out at this point and are willing to exagerate the problem for more than what it is.   My point is that it's a tough thing to prove unless someone recorded it and can verify the time it took place etc.

The magistrates that fined her did hear recordings of the events, and I believe the neighbours complained to the police 25 times (she denies the last five).

My concern is with the ASBO. According to the article, anyone can request one, no real evidence needed since they accept hear-say evidence. Soooooo, you piss me off and I can go get an ASBO claiming you've done this and thus, and why, no Yer Honour, I don't have any "proof per se" just what I heard. Maybe.  Alrighty, here's the ASBO, go out and make someone's life hell because you don't like the colour of their house or that they keep their lawn a little on the long side for your personal preferences or heaven forbid, a woman has sex.

I can see "1984" in this situation. If she's breaking a noise ordinance, then report it to the cops and let them handle it. But with an ASBO who's to say it's not just some jealous neighbour who's upset that she's getting some and it ain't with him?

If only it were that juicy  - I believe the main complainant is a half deaf person - if one is half deaf and can still hear the couple carry on, I can just about imagine how loud they must be! It's a pity that because this is England, the recordings won't be leaked on Nancy Grace. I could have listened to them while perusing at the latest plastinated corpses making love  .

Not being a silent little thing myself during the throws of passion, I still respect the fact that the neighbours probably don't want to hear me having a good time. I really wouldn't want to hear others doing it (or UM's hearing it), especially in the middle of the night when I'm trying to sleep. If the walls really were that thin that everyone could hear, why didn't they stick some insulation on the walls? It can be disguised behind plasterboard and the plasterboard painted or wallpapered like the rest of the room, and it would be better than the police fronting up every time you had a shag surely?

Yes, I caught the second story which shed a lot more accurate light just after I posted. I was in the middle of writing my response and the screen didn't update until I posted.

After reading it, I could see where there would be problems. If you're so loud that you're waking up a half-deaf neighhour and Environmental is able to clearly tape your noises through a solid wall, well, there's normal sounds and then there's "over-exuberance". Or faking as it seemed to be hinted at... Either way, neighbours shouldn't be bombarded with it consistently. I've had to get after the upstairs neighbours for their loud, drunken screm-fests (why is it that the #1 word that can always be heard clearly is "FUCK"?) because we have a munchkin here. Shoot, I've gotten after them when he wasn't here. A person can only take so much of drunks screaming at each other and blasting loud music at 2 am before ya have to complain.

This just seems to point back to a lack of what is becoming uncommon courtesy. And not having a little respect for other people.

I'm having a laugh inside my mind thinking they could cover the walls in those styrofoam egg cartons.  I hear that's supposed to be a good insulator.

That's the law - it's there to resolve disagreements - though I'd guess the police would rather not waste time on this sort of bollocks. Could it get more petty than begrudging your neighbour a good, old fuck from time to time?

I doubt she's having sex anyway, not in this country; she's probably watching tennis and getting carried away.

Miss O’Connor told the court that when she first moved into  the flat, in November 2007, the noise started at midnight and lasted until 3am.

Damn!  Three hours?  Was he using Cialis?  Don't the commercials tell you to call a doctor if you stay hard more than four hours?  He was pushing the limit.
