rare albino deer from the forests of

Status: offline 		How incredibly beautiful. Here in Australia, we don't have wild deer, so seeing ANY deer is amazing to us!! But those white ones, how magnificent.

Status: offline 		That was fantastic!!!   I have seen pictures of these deer several times and thought them a rarity, but this documentary shows they are not so rare, yet not common either. Thank you for sharing!!

I may have to take a drive north in the near future, that's about 5 hours north of me.

I've seen one of these as part of a herd near my home in Connecticut. it didn't look as healthy as the deer in your link but it was just as beautiful and striking.

Status: offline 		This is amazing. That's just an hour's drive from my home town, and I've spent a big part of my life hiking and camping up there. I've sorta kinda heard whispers of this from time to time, but I never realized the herd was so large and well-established. I think the locals are protecting them somewhat by keeping it on the down-low. Which is pretty cool, actually. I really respect that. Good for them. I think i may take a drive up there sometime next month and scout 'em out.  I think I know who to call to find out where they hang.

It's always great to see the deer cruising through my yard, but these white ones are amazing!  I wonder what the fawns look like, if they have the shadowy spots.

Actually. There is a very strong rumour that we do have wild deer here in Australia. They were introduced from Europe into "The Royal National Park" just south of Sydney as hunting game for the visit of Prince Edward some decades ago. The park was established for the purpose.

I don't think that the Prince actually ever bagged any deer there, and when you see the terrain and foliage in the park it is easy to understand why. There is very thick scrub on the tops of the ridges and many cliffs and steep terrain as you move away from them.

I'm not too sure if they have survived the numerous fires that have been through the area, but I spend a lot of time in the park cycling, and have never seen one.

Yeah, funny, isn't it? That they've managed to keep it so low-profile for so long? The only way I've heard about them was an odd tangential reference here and there... like the occasional newspaper story about some guy who was charged with shooting an albino deer, and residents of the area were angry because they really value their albino deer. The subtext being, area residents are apparently accustomed to having a lot of albino deer around. Or a guy who took a road-killed albino deer to a taxidermist in Minoqua and the taxidermist reported him. Just an occasional snippet like that from time to time, not really spelling it out, but if you notice enough fragments over the years, you start to realize there seem to be a lot of stories about albino deer in that particular area.

Edit: And if you're thinking of making a trip to check 'em out, why don't you drop me a line? I do a lot of camping up north of Hayward, in the Delta-Drummond area if you're familiar with that, and I'd love to coordinate with you. Ever see the elk herd over by Cable?

I haven't been north of Oshkosh in a few years since I usually went up there to hunt and CWD has but an end to that for me.

I'll probably get up to Oshkosh or Neenah to do some fishing this summer and will try and take a road trip to the area. I will send you a mail on the other side when my plans get made.

On a related note there's a town down towards in southern Illinois that has a large nmber of albino squirrels. I drove through once and saw several in a park. Google says its Olney but I can't remember.

I spent a few months in Wisconsin in 2006; beautiful country up there. I never heard of them while I was there; they are very beautiful. I've heard tales from pals of mine spotting albino deer from time to time, but I've never seen one. I did have an albino grey squirrel living outside my window a few years ago, and I was amazed by that.
