my mom is here this weekend. She wants to check her email....

She uses OUtlook Express for her mail.

I NEVER use outlook at home. I have no idea how to set it up.

Her email is a bellsouth thing.  We have no idea if it's POP3, IMAP or HTML.  And WTF  do we put in the fields to make it work>??

For outlook express,

open outlook express.

click on tools ----> accounts ----> click on mail tab----> ADD

your settings are POP3

incoming - mail.bellsouth.net

outgoing - mail.bellsouth.net

And I have no idea what your account name or pw is, but you do.

webmail.bellsouth.net

that will let her login directly to check her e-mail without outlook or such.

The easiest way is for her to log in to bellsouth and check directly. I use outlook at home but if away, just go to verizon and read there.

Greedy,

Who's her Internet service provider?  My ISP is TalkTalk and I use Outlook.   When I'm using another computer, I just go to TalkTalk's home page and click on "mail".  Then, I can access my mail in pretty much the same way as if I were using Yahoo or Hotmail.

To get the POP3 server etc. you will have to contact her ISP, each ISP has its own servers, so the settings are all different. Sorry if that isn't that helpful, but that's the way it is.

I have outlook express.  If you haven't taken Arpig's suggestion yet (and they will tell you exactly what to type into incoming and outgoing), I would try pop.bellsouth.net for incoming....and smtp.bellsouth.net for outgoing.  (and Outlook Express is POP3)

Good luck!  :)

shit.. that didnt work :(

You havin' any luck yet?

If your ISP is not bellsouth, she should still be able to check her mail, but probably not send any. Many ISPs no longer allow mail relays. You have to use their outgoing (SMTP) server, which means you'll need to call them and find out what it is if you don't know. Also, if your ISP does allow mail relays, mail.bellsouth.com still won't work unless you check the box that says "My server requires authentication" on the Servers tab (do NOT check "Log on using Secure Password Authentication").

In addition, when OE checks mail it's default setting is to delete it from the server after it is downloaded. So if you are setting her up on your computer while she's there, you might want to check "Leave a copy of messages on server" on the Advanced tab so she can still pull her stuff down to her computer when she gets home.

K.

Greedy,

try this it might be a lot easier nothing to set up. it's dirt simple but only for checking mail, not sending (kind of a one way thing). I've used it before, comes in handy.

keep in mind that email opened with Outlook Express will download from bellsouth's servers to THAT computer, and may not be retrievable when the normally used compter opens Outlook Express.

actually....I managed to put my outlook express as an IMAP in my windows live mail so it doesn't download it to the computer :) POP3 truly sucks :/ even though there's supposed to be an option somewhere which you can uncheck so then it won't download the mail OFF the server..but it's an annoyance..I highly recommend IMAP if you can figure it out.
Unfortunately I don't know how to work it with bellsouth.

actually I just looked at the instructions for POP3
I use the exact same information for POP3 as I do for IMAP, except instead of incoming server being 995..I use 993 then it works.
Also..you need to use your ISP's outgoing SMTP...

like you said, sb, going through all the configurations is an annoyance, and because it's in relation to a short term visit, is why i mentioned the servers downloading.

Personally, when I'm away from the computers that I normally use, I just check my email at my email's main website.  That way I know what needs immediate attention, and what can wait until later.

She tried checking through bellsouth/ATT website.. it wouldnt let her log in.  Maybe because her's is a secondary account?  Oh well.. she's decided she can wait until she gets home tomorrow.

she might be using the wrong password, depending if she uses the same password for outlook express AND bellsouth.
