The items might have been constructed to deliver pain, but there is a plan to give some of the proceeds to Amnesty International so that their sale helps fight modern torture, Mr Ettinger said.

This a hot topic in the United States where the former administration of George W. Bush is under fire for allowing water boarding and other so-called "enhanced" interrogation techniques.

"Assuming that we will sell the collection, a portion of the proceeds will be going to Amnesty International and other organizations devoted to preventing torture in the future," he said.

Did you click through the photos? I saw a witch catcher, and an iron pear...

Does anyone know what the long thin metal strap looking things are? Possibly a part of a cage of some kind? I couln't tell for sure.

Holy shit.  I saw the pics, but can't tell what each of them is for.  Something tells me I'd just rather go to jail, or wasn't that an option back then?

More information (probably too much information for the squeamish) on the items in the photos accompanying the article:

Iron pear, or pear of anguish

I was mistaken about what I called the witch catcher, it's actually called a Witch's spider.

There was an item they called a witch catcher, which is discussed at length here.

Nope, actually the concept of confinement being the punishment rather than what happened while you awaited punishment is a fairly modern idea. Guess who started it? AMERICANS! Yep, that's right. The Quakers in Pennsylvania came up with the concept of the penitentary. Penitentaries were places to give penitance. Before we had prisons, most punishments were either death, torture, dismemberment, or humiliation. In England, pick-pocketing was a hangable offense. The history of corrections is rather fascinating. (I started off as a criminal justice major in college, and later took it as my minor.)

Status: offline 		Sanity, thanks for those links, they were very informative.  I had actually googled a bit but hadn't come up with much. 

It's really quite disturbing to imagine that this actually went on.  It's not even so much the graphic details of these barbaric physical tortures, but worse yet....the "crimes" that people were punished for.  Mind-blowing stuff.

I would imagine things like losing a hand would keep someone from stealing.  Knowing that's the price to be paid, it's amazing that anyone would even take such a risk.

If you're desperate enough, you'll take all sorts of risks. 300 years ago, if you were living day to day and facing starvation, you might consider theft as a occupation worthy of consideration. I don't understand bank robbery in modern times; they almost always get caught, and it carries some heavy time in the Federal pen. I'm amazed by meth cooks in my own state; you can get a life term for cooking meth in this state, and our prisons are horrible. They are almost all plantation style prisons where you have to work out in the hot sun with a hoe (no tractors, they use horse and wagons) to get priviliges. If you refuse to work, they throw you in the hole. Prison is enough of a deterrent for me, but again I'm not a desperate addict or living in horrible poverty.

Well, if starving yourself, or watching your children starve is the other option, I can quite well see how people took the chance.

Status: offline 		That is my best guess as well.  If someone did not die from the initial injuries blood poisoning and infections would likely kill them.
