That's not goth, thats emo !(Now).

I grew up around and with the goths and new romantics in old London Town.  None of them where particularly 'depressed'.  Artistic absolutely and disillusioned yes, but depressed no.

I think that there is simply similarities in dress, nothing more than that.

Lol, I'm talking about nearly 20 years ago; no one was running around calling anything goth (At least around where I lived but looking back, my style seemed to morph from metal chick to goth chick).  Emo seems to be relatively new.  I still haven't quite figured out wtf it is...looks like androgynous goth with some neon thrown in but that just may be indicative of me getting old.  Gaaaack!
Now I really am going to be depressed, lol!  :>
So, yo uthink it's entirely a happenstance of similar 'costuming', as it were?

20 years ago Goth was in full swing depending on where you were, at least band wise, etc. Sisters of Mercy, Bauhaus, Alien Sex Fiend, etc. I think the big difference these days is that it is much more of a clothing/fashion statement then just a scene involving like minded people into the same type of depressive music, books, horror, etc. I mean I came from the middle of nowhere and graduated in 87 and was fully aware of a goth scene and very into the music if not putting on fishnets and eye makeup and wandering around a graveyard.

That said, I agree with a lot here that I have found most so called "Goths" to be extremely vanilla about other things, it seems they get all the alternative they need out of their dress/fashion etc.

+25 Years ago I was hanging at 'the cube' listening to Bauhaus and AdamAnt with the goths and the new romantics. (God am I showing my age, or was I just an early starter?)

Maybe it was different in the states, I believe it was from what I can gather, but the gothic and new romantic phase was well underway in the UK by the 80s.

So called goths were always well read.  They take/took pride in their appearence.  Tends to be a corrolation between that and 'scene' people now.    Much more than emo.  I would say that has a direct line to BDSMers - at least the ones that enjoy to be seen anyway.  The whole corsetry and clothing - and love of history?  Recognition of the artistic?

The goths I knew were pretty traditional rather than adventurous.  Romantic in a way - enjoyed belonging to groups whilst maintaining their individuality.  Being seen.  But strictly private people.

*LOL* 25+ years ago I was giving birth to the 1st of 3 offspring who would provide the fodder for the current Goth/Industrial movement. *LOL*

Incredible isn't it?  I think many times people mix up scene kids with kandi kids with goths with emo too and it's becoming quite an issue.  Over in the UK, goths are quite protective of scene kids... But buy or have too much from hot topic and your a poseur!

Yeah, my stepdaughter is a kandi with EroGuro leanings. My oldest is technically Fantasy Steampunk. The daughter is Victoriandustrial/Victorian Steampunk, and my son... well... um... actually...the word around here is "Ambercrombie punk poseur wannabe"... at least, that's how his brother and sister describe him. I keep telling them he's still developing -- it took them a while to develop -their- style as well.

*LOL*

Figuring out which category of "strange" your child belongs in: Several thousand dollars and a therapist.
Getting it right enough that your kids don't look at you like you have three heads: Priceless!

Wait! Where'd it go? It's the best time of the year, playoffs!  There's three game 7s in the next two nights. Tivo's set and the Jerguns is where it can be reached.

I never watched hockey on TV, actually -- I grew up in Upstate NY... so we'd go to the rink every afternoon and watch them duke it out on the ice for real. I think that's where I developed my olfactory fascination with blood. I don't think I ever came home without a delicate sprinkling of crimson spray on my skin and clothes.

I played pond-hockey for much of my young life as well -- all of my neighborhood friends were boys, so as soon as the pond was frozen hard enough to take our skates, we were taking sticks to one another on the pond. Again, I think I learned much of how to give and get a beating in those pond-hockey years! And yes, I was the only girl in my Catholic-school class to consistently come to school with black eyes and fat lips all winter long! If only they'd seen the -body- bruises!!! Of course, I gave as good or better than I got.

... and somehow I -still- managed to grow up a lady.... on a good day... when I try hard.

Dame Calla

Do you think there's a goth/kink link and if so, what is it?
If you agree that the two are linked, why do you believe that is the case?
Any other thoughts, feel free.  :>

Have a great week, folks.  :>

I too, was 'goth' before I had even heard the term...but then again, there were no other goths at My school while I attended *shrugs*

I think that some people can't tell if someone is kinky if they are decked out in black wearing a collar (as do a lot of the goths around here).  Seems that most of the hot topic goths all run around with collars, handcuffs and cheap whips, so I can see where one could draw the conclusion that they are also into kink.

OK ... I'm a damn cowboy. No tats, just one pierced ear. But I've had some great relationships with Goth ladies from 18 to 40. Kinky ... damn right.
I don't claim to know what everyone is like, just those that I've known. If one lady hadn't gotten a great chance to work on aids research, we would have been married. I'm not sure what style or traits they have, but this old cowboy loves them.

I grew up in upstate NY until I went south for school and unfortunately never played hockey. My mother wasn't keen on the 5 am practices.

When I was in school, my love for hockey went up a notch and a lot of my friends and I played roller/street hockey. After the lockout, I stopped watching it for a couple years and when I moved back to NY, got back into it again after playing cards with a couple guys on the local minor league team here.

As i grew up due to music, friends and dislike and likes i oszillated between: Punk, Gothic (was not a "movement" we simply heard cure, sisters of mercy and read Byron and Hardrock/Rock). Because of my own music i had also contacts to jazzers, bluesers, folkers and classical inclined people.

My dresscode is still; whatever fts the mood of the day.

Due to my love for bikes (with and without motor) i hung out with a lot of bikers.

I met likeminded ones everywhere and kinky ones too, as i was a bit heavy on the punk i especially loved hanging out with my very good in school and generally clean cut friends, because i was one of them concerning the grades.

Coming back to the question, i can not really answer the question, because it would be an estimation and i have not scientific proof or do i know of any serious research.

I'm goth. I'm open minded and a tad-bit demented. I've always had a facination with the color black, knives, black widow spiders, and in my teens...bondage, handcuffs, and it excelled quickly from there. Not all goths are kinky or in the scene. It's all based on wether they just like black, their personailty, likes, interests, and exploratory boundaries. Goths I guess are like everyone else just with a variant thinking pattern. I love the demented, twisted, and mayhem filled. I get a thrill out of ropes, chains, canes, and floggers. I've been labeled weird for as long as I can remember always going for the most extreme.  Life experiences can also shape the person into liking kink. Such as if you take charge or if you have the inner longing to submit to one (or multiple). people are people, makeup and clothes aren't really a deciding factor.

The goth kids only come to our play parties to listen to our awesomely cool scene music.*snorts*

J/k I think it's like any sub culture, people in sub cultures (goth, punk, ect), tend to be more open minded, so more into exploring life in general.

Fast Reply -  I find a large amount of cross-over between various music/cultural scenes and Kinkdom.  People who are open minded and accepting of different lifestyles and sexual behaviors are just easier to talk to in general.  My musical tastes are very wide ranging and how I dress depends on whether or not it is a professional or social situation, the weather and my mood.  But I prefer either a Gothic or a Gypsy/Tribal look for clubs, dancing and parties.

"Goth" is but one fandom in many that seem to cross into kink. There's also:

LARP
Steampunk
New Romantic
Mideval (SCA)
Thespian
Furries
Darkwave
RHPS
etc,
etc,...
