I agree to a point...the most important people at the university to me are those "ditch diggers" who keep the room clean, duplicate stuff, keep the plumbing working, raise funds, etc.  They are the "operating system"  (ex: Windows) of the university, so to speak.  I'm just an "application program" (ex: WORD)  that makes using the university worthwhile.

Both are important, but you generally have to have a reason to use the system for the system to be of value.

Additionally, if it weren't for the "elite", they wouldn't be working at the university and be able to take advantage of free tuition, etc.  They might still be working, but their opportunities to advance will have been diminished, with the loss of that benefit.

There are always extremes as potentials, no doubt.  And that's why we see that "pendulum" effect so often.

However, life tends to devolve into chaos or low level stability without a direction and a reaching for something better.  We just become a pack of chimps rather than a society or culture.  The difference is that we have "chimps" that aren't content to poke a stick into a termite mound.

I think we all need to start thinking outside the box.
I bet the execs at G.M. wish they did.
