DomImus -> RE: Creativity and the lack thereof (5/12/2009 7:06:41 PM)

I'm still trying to figure out how responding to a dormant thread equals a lack of creativity. Some people are not necessarily responding to another poster as much as they are just adding their own thoughts to the general idea of the thread whether it was started yesterday or last year. Those thoughts are still valid even if they are a little late to the party. I think the creativity jab is nothing more than thinly veiled condescension.

I am occasionally annoyed by the revival of an old thread when the relevance of the original post isn't any longer the case (Example: someone asked for advice in December, 2005 and someone rekindles the thread, offering new advice in May, 2009).  Theoretically, it could lead to some useful knowledge but that particular sort of thread revival irks me.

This is the type of thread necromancy that annoys me, as well. Many times other posters, not realizing that the thread is years old, take the time to write out thoughtful advice in reply to the OP, who hasn't even logged in for the last 3 years. Another board I belong to handles this by requesting that people who want to discuss an issue brought up in an old thread start a new thread and link to the old one. It seems to work very well.

I think I've finally figured out what it is that bothers Me so much about the resurrection of old threads.  It's not the topics being brought back.  Some of them are quite good and the discussions had very interesting.  Of course, when people bring the threads back and attempt to continue the discussion with those who haven't been on the site for some time, I tend to see them on the same level as those who walk into a room and try to speak to someone who left that same room months ago.

No.  What bothers Me about it is the complete lack of creativity.  The inability (or so it seems) to take a basic idea or topic and make it one's own.  I mean, isn't that what we're doing anyway?  None of us came up with this stuff originally, but most of us aren't doing things exactly the same way as anybody else.

I said recently in another thread that at least 95% of My material was something that I got from somebody else.  I took ideas, knowledge, and concepts that I learned from others, added My own style and personality, and whatever it was became Mine.  I didn't set out to duplicate.  I wanted an expression of Me that couldn't have possibly come from somebody else, even if the original idea did.

Wouldn't one think that a good Top or Dominant have some level of imagination and creativity?  Nobody has to be a rocket scientist to have these qualities (I'm certainly not) but isn't there a dash of these characteristics reflected in wiitwd?

For the majority of the time, people that do this aren't regular posters. The bulk of people that read and write here either start their own threads or reply to current ones.

I don't really see what being creative as a dom or top has to do with reviving an old thread. I don't think the people that add to an old thread are thinking about their image or considering how *uncreative* they are being.

Linking *lack of creativity* to someone randomly posting to an old thread seems far odder, to me.

sorry this has nothing to do with old threads but rather with a new one...someone started a thread because of  worries about the waterboarding thread thats up...it was called jack the ripper and i was reading up with interest but it has totally dissapeared...why is that then?...so much for starting a new thread ...then i did think it would all have fitted in the waterboard tread...

It is like that in all forums unfortunately. Furthermore, in response to what xxblushesxx mentioned, as to not post twice on the same subject, she is correct about the newbies to this forum, search out a topic/subject and missing the date it was originally posted or last active. I, sorry to say, am guilty of that and I apologize to the current members here. When I was told about this forum by a friend, I came in and looked around. Started my own intro thread and then searched out the topic I was interested in since that was a feature I did not see on other forums. I just blindly responded without noticing the date on the thread and I took some heat for it. Oh well. Live and learn but hey, better than starting a whole new thread and repeating everything therein, no?
This is a great forum actually and I try to come on in from time to time when I can but not much is active as far as the topic of my interest so I just lurk around and post up when I come accross a thread that is reasonably current or at least try to.[;)] I do try also to be creative in my posts but there are some who.....are a bit negative we'll say.[8|][:D][;)]
Till next time.
Ciao for now.

i think a variety of factors might be involved. i try not to assume the person is lazy, is reasonably technically proficient, and did attempt to use the search feature. knowing this there are still those that find it difficult to be creative. i've encountered them, if they could pirate your smile they would. originality isn't their forte and expressing themselves in a manner they haven't witnessed another doing is a foreign concept. of course i think of them as odd creatures to myself, but i try to be compassionate as well. sometimes when a skill is easy for us to master we can be oblivious that others lack the same aptitude we possess. we're all accomplished at something, perhaps their talents reside elsewhere.

Why would anyone get upset about anything that happens or doesn't happen on this site?
I have tried the chat rooms they bored me so I stopped going into them.
If I have a question or a comment about what someone else has written I write to them directly. Why would I want to have the converstation in an open forum unless I think it is important for other people to read. I don't look at past boards because
1 The people who write may no longer be on the site and
2 I want to read the current understanding of an issue because people grow and learn.
Why would anyone be retiscent at starting their own post? That is if you actually know how to do it. It took me ages before I learned how to do it or before I wanted to but that's just me. I still don't know what wiitwd stands for so would someone be so kind as to enlighten me? By the way the fact that I don't know doesn't make me a bad or a stupid person now does it? It just means that I haven't actually figured it out yet. We can't all know everything that there is to know can we? CM still has the highest percentage of alright people on it in my opinion even if I think some of them are jerks.
At least we can talk to one another without it costing us anything. Now isn't that a nice change? Too much ranting and not enough communicatig makes Jack and Jill boring!

DemonKia -> RE: Creativity and the lack thereof (5/19/2009 2:05:21 PM)

FR, after read thru, & waiting 'til this became something of an 'old thread' that I could resurrect

OP, some of the more 'negative' answers are: narcissism / attention whore stuff; obliviousness; a desire to have a conversation rather than just read other peoples' conversations; posting anything is better than nothing at all; out of an awareness that more read a thread than just the OP & the thread's obvious contributors; & even occasionally, I'm betting, cuz that person genuinely had something 'innovative' to say in that thread . . . . Some of which has already been pointed out by others in this thread . . . .

I like originality, it's great when I find it, but I don't generally expect it . ....

Creativity, like copy-editing, is a lot tougher to cultivate than I think is being given credence, & I like to flatter myself that I have some talents & skills in either direction . .... .

What I expect to find in a bulletin board / online discussion forum is kinda leisurely & haphazard conversations about reasonably organized topics, with plenty of snarkiness, sniping, & flame wars to keep things from getting too dull, hehehehe . ... .

I'm making a very casual study of how people drag 'in-flesh socializing expectations' onto the 'net & how that works & does not work . . . . . . I try to keep a pretty open mind, it's a group consensus process & I'm mostly just a hanger-on to the whole thing . . . . . . . No conclusions yet, still mostly data gathering . .. . .

Anyways. I've been hanging out a tiny bit on the 'other' site (FL), & I note that some people there quite deliberately & casually 'bump' threads back up, with no other contribution, they just like the thread so much they post to it just to pop it back to the top . . . . . . How people use these various discussion formats could make for decent thread all on its own . . . . . Unfortunately, 'how to use CM' threads get moved to 'Off Topic' by the mods, & that strikes me as a 'less than useful' place to have a 'serious' discussion about how to use CM to get ones BDSM on . .. . . But I wanna control way more than just how people do or do not post, lol . . . . . .
