Just a FYI, the IFC channel was/is showing films about Sex Extremes.... awesome review of the history of bdsm. It is showing films dated as far back as the 30's... just thought I'd share! :)

While I too won't get a chance to watch it, I imagine that if people were to learn that BDSM has been around for eons ...yanno since television was invented and all (cuz that's like forever ago ), that some of those people would realize it must not be as horrible as the church would have you believe.  Thereby, it is far more normal than many think.

Just one way they could do such.

Well, with newspapers they create titles they think will draw the most people in, it may be the same with t.v programmes.

Here's hoping it's not full of wishy washy cop-out movies that make it look like we're all wannabe Houdinis or deeply disturbed rapists and mass murderers.

Any chance someone could post updates with which movies are actually played, for those of us outside the US?

Actually it didn't, it went through a basic movie history detailing bdsm in film. The documentary also showed an array of other sex extremes that have been detailed in cinema. It showed the good, the bad and the ugly... also had a lot of foreign films that I had not heard of but now want to check out.  I will see if I can find a list of the movies it critiqued.

Apparently it's a whole series done by the IFC channel called Indie Sex, I just happened to catch one about Extremes.

Thanks Kaiel, looking forward to that. Makes a nice change for a TV channel to take it seriously.

Here's the blurb from Netflix:

"For as long as there've been movies, there's been sex in movies -- a connection that filmmakers Lisa Ades and Lesli Klainberg explore in depth in this four-part series from the Independent Film Channel. In segments titled "Censored," "Taboos," "Teens" and "Extremes," a long list of film industry veterans -- including John Waters, Ally Sheedy, Dita Von Teese, Tatum O'Neal and more -- talk candidly about sex and cinema."

Last night's show was the "Extremes." It wasn't exclusively about BDSM but did have some scenes in it. I'd seen it before but watched most of it again last night. Pretty interesting and I'd like to see the other installments at some point.

Exactly, it was not ALL BDSM, but did show quite a bit of the history in cinema.... Thanks for throwing up the little blurb about it !

Thanks both...I of course stand by the letter of the law and haven't gone looking for it on some very well known P2P sites, and therefore won't be watching it anytime soon, like tomorrow or something...

Absolutely right. It may be all those movies we've all seen-9 1/2 weeks, etc. and fetish clubs which I always thought was more a fashion show then anything else, there are exceptions, I understand that, but costumes and preening seem to be a big part.

What they need is to talk to people actually -in- the lifestyle, the people who organise events like pony-play, rope bondage etc. or talk well to
know authors who are in the life rastyle-people like Jack Rinella (a personal favourite) or Jay Wiseman (who I think is very big on safety), Dossie Eastman (not too familiar with her work though).

People who have years of real real-life D/s experience to "tell it like it is" not, how its seen by the media and by extention the vanilla publuc.

I wish it was being shown here in the U.K. Typical of the Government;they probably wouldn't let it be show here-we're all meant to eat beans on toast, vanilla (arrggghhhh!!!) ice cream, and watch Coranation street.

Unfortunately it doesn't matter how many positive tv programmes they put on about BDSM, the negative one's which are in abundance will always catch the attention far more.

I watched it...and now have seen all 4 segments.  I think I am going to have to get one of those DVD recorders and record those segments when they're on again as I find them really interesting...it is amazing how various filmmakers put their point of view across through art films and "mainstream" movies and how varied aspects of certain films leads to their "mainstream" showings.  In one way, it is too bad that "9 1/2 weeks" and "The Secretary" seem to be the two biggest films with an S/M and, in The Secretary's case at least, a D/s point of view but in another way, it does open up...for those curious/intelligent enough to seek it out...the public to learning more about wiitwd.

Well people know that homosexuality has been around forever and that hasn't changed their minds on it.

Wow sweeping statement there. I'd beg to differ there and have experience. My dad was a huge homophobe a few years ago but has learnt to accept it through greater knowledge.

Yes, I did catch that doc a couple of months ago... and watched it with a notepad in my lap, so I could update my Netflix cue. ;)

I don't have cable, but I'll put that on the list of things to see and look into that Netflix thing that all the kids are doing.

Thanks for the heads up!

Download it and file it under "Educational Material" then if you attract "all the Queens men" and their rules, one of them will have to profess it's turning them on before you have to worry.
