So, my  boyfriend is REALLY excited about this Star Trek movie that's gonna be out in a couple weeks.  I was wondering if it would be worth it to take him to see it in IMAX instead of just our regular movie theater.

What's IMAX all about? Does it really make that big of a difference?

He's been looking forward to this and talking about it for such a long time... I want to make it as big and special as it can be... after all, he did sit through Hannah Montana in 3-D for me last year... he deserves it.

So, is it worth the hour-ish drive and the extra $6.50? Is it bigger and better? Should I do it?

My friend went to see it yesterday, he thought it was awesome. Have no idea what IMAX is but everything 3-D IS bigger&better...

IMAX - give you a more panoramatic view of an action/animation movie ...better graphics and sound quality will keep you on the edge of your seat.  it's way better than viewing on a regular movie screen though it's a slightly higher ticket price.

the movies i've screened this year (ie The Watchmen and soon to be release, Battle for Terra), i've enjoyed them on IMAX better.

IMAX is the acronym for Image Maximum

to give you an idea of the size:

A typical IMAX screen is 16 meters high by 22 meters wide (approximately 52 by 72 feet), but they can be much larger

I believe there are different types of IMAX. This is off the top of my head so most likely wrong...lol.

In St Louis we have a science center with an IMAX theater. The films played there are taken with multiple cameras simultaneously so you can actually look to the sides, overhead, and behind you. You feel like you are surrounded by a world actually part of it. The various differences in the angles of the cameras give a 3D feel to the presentations.

The new IMAX theaters do not surround you but they do have a large concave screen that can accommodate several camera angles at once. Many of the movies are displayed in 3D. You must still wear glasses and although better than 30 years ago they still leave a lot to be desired.

All that said I do think it is worth the premium price…if you smuggle in your own popcorn and soda…lol

My understanding is that in this case, IMAX and 3-D don't go hand in hand.  This is NOT a 3-D movie, because they didn't film it in a way that it could be.

The automated message on the phone for the theater I'm thinking about going to, claims that the IMAX screen is 6 stories tall... and that the sound is really intense.

I just wonder how that compares to a regular movie... like, is it SOOOO much bigger and better that it's gonna be worth it? and on opening weekend, is it going to sell out? I don't want to drive an hour and a half and find out we can't get tickets.

Unfortunately, there's no one to give me these answers at the movie theater because it's just an automated system.

The IMAX near us has the trailer but it doesn't mention 3d. I have been there to see Harry Potter and it is a great theater. I can hardly wait till this one hits. http://www.thehenryford.org/imax/index.aspx
