Aileen, Imbolc is an old Celtic holiday celebrated still by Pagans of many different varieties.

Historically, it was a recognition of the time of year when the cows beging to give milk again, and how that is associated with nurturing motherhood. It is also a recognition of the returning sun (days starting to NOTICIBLY get longer) and its associations with the cyclical growth of masculine energy.

St. Bridgit's day is the Christainization of Imbolc under the Celtic church(Later to be subsumed by the Catholic Church), and the Irish associations of the Goddess Bridgit and motherhood. Candlemas is the non-Irish specific form of the holiday focusing on the practice of lighting candles to encourage the returning light.

p.s. Groundhog day is a New World holiday .... there are no groundhogs in Europe ... but the early settlers brought with them the tradition of weather prediction by animal movements .... alas, there are no hedgehog's native to North America, so the groundhog was substituted.

Merry Imbolc!
Bright Blessings to you all!

Edited to add: I had a big ritual planned for this morning, but good old morning sickness (combined with the flu) acted up. Hopefully I'll feel better before I go to bed tonight. This year's celebration is especially important to me, as my belly's been doing some growing of it's own.... four months and counting.

Thanks for the reminder, Fergus.

For me, Groundhog Day can only mean one thing: Ned Ryerson and ice sculpting with chainsaws.

Ok, that's two things.

Bright Blessings for Imbolc! I'm attending my first group ritual this saturday in celebration (with my local CUUPS chapter.) I'm sooo nervous, but then again, it is a time for new beginnings!

Happy , Happy and Happy to you too!

Today has special hapiness for me...as it marks the one year anniversary of the official & legal end of a four year divorce process for me.
