My feelings on the actual event aside, I think it would be wise for people everywhere, to learn from the incident, and prepare; ie… how not to panic in an actual event. It has dawned on me, this is not just the response New Yorkers would have.

I can’t imagine how anyone would think, especially in these times; such an activity would be a good idea.

That I definitely agree with.  And that someone dropped the ball on this one big time.  I'd be downright livid and firing people right and left for this.  Yeah, it was probably only an hour that things were in disorder, but, over 1000 out of just one building.  That's 1000 hours of lost man-hours right there.  At what they get paid, figure conservatively $14/hr., That's at least $14,000 lost right there, just in that one building.

I don't want to see a 'blame game' being played.  I want to see them figure out precisely who dropped the ball on them getting word out about this, and their head on a plate, swiftly, efficiently and harshly.

"Last week, I approved a mission over New York. I take responsibility for that decision," Caldera said. "While federal authorities took the proper steps to notify state and local authorities in New York and New Jersey, it's clear that the mission created confusion and disruption. I apologize and take responsibility for any distress that flight caused."

quote:

The FAA notified the New York Police Department of the flyover, telling them photos of the Air Force One jet would be taken about 1,500 feet above the Statue of Liberty around 10 a.m. Monday. It had a classified footnote that said, "Information in this document shall not be released to the public or the media."

quote:

NYPD spokesman Paul Browne said typically a flight like this would be publicized to avoid causing a panic, but they were under orders not to in this case. They regularly get requests for flyovers, but without secrecy restrictions.

This doesn't sound like dropping the ball to me; more like, chain of command.

Ugh *headdesk*.  Yeah, some people involved in this would be packing up their desks today and out of the building by noon, including Caldera, if I had any say in the matter.

It appears that the Dems are discovering that having absolute responsibility for the store is harder than they thought.

No one left to blame but yourself when things go wrong, no matter how hard you try to deny responsibility the only one you're fooling is yourself.

It's the Big O's ship and being the Captain means ................

Bush tried that it's not my fault thing as well, they all do. It seems to be the American way!!!

LOL, I don't usually agree with you on many things Bull, but I certainly do on this.  "Uh oh!  Something went wrong!  Blame someone else, QUICK!"

I hear "It's not my fault." soooo many times a day, that by about 8pm I just want to wretch on somebody's shoes. [:'(]

I don't see this to be a faulty individual issue, but a faulty system issue.

I'm not sure, but I think I read they preformed the exercise for 30 mins. I can't stop imagining what the scene looked like from the air.

bottom line is, someone should have publicized the event and made sure the public would not be subject to undue panic.  it's not like they did this in los angeles, it's new york for christ's sake!  hello!!  is anyone thinking about consequences out there in washington?

I’m not sure what or where the bottom line is (trying not to be too much of a pessimist), but I can say, I wouldn’t be any more impressed if it had been done in Los Angeles, as opposed to New York.

Yeah, aren't they supposed to be trained to do that, or something? [&:]

It's really not 'Air Force 1' unless the President is aboard, but having said that I can't believe that Mr. Obama didn't know that this was going to happen. It's not like taking your Moms car for a drive on a school night. That 747 doesn't leave Andrews Air Force base without the President knowing about it..

I had read that first part, and was wondering what that was about; I mean, why call it that, if it wasn't so?

My thoughts were, the story holds water, about as well as a sieve.

No Servant,it's not like taking mom's car.On the other hand if President Obam was kept up to date on what amounts to a p.r. photo op( no matter that in execution,it blew up)I want him impeached.Given the state of the economy, two low level conflicts, health care and republican obstructionism....my President better have bigger things on his mind than some pictures of a plane in flight.

servantforuse -> RE: Air Force One Backup Rattles New York Nerves (4/28/2009 6:30:10 PM)

Maybe he should spend some of the stimulus money to have someone watch that airplane. What if he needed to go some place and the plane wasn't there. ??

Perhaps the cost of such a "photo op", could cover that?

slvemike4u -> RE: Air Force One Backup Rattles New York Nerves (4/28/2009 6:42:41 PM)

Perhaps thats the purview of the White House Trav.Dept.....rather than a concern for the chief executive?

I would think the cost of the event and the possibility of endangerment to 'The People', would be a concern of Mr. Obama's.

Kim

slvemike4u -> RE: Air Force One Backup Rattles New York Nerves (4/28/2009 7:13:34 PM)

It wasn't an "event" it was a photo op for a publicity campaign. And if the"possibility of endangerment to the people" had been properly assesed....I'm thinking it wouldn't have been done in quite this fashion......Still do not see nearly the importance level that would demand The President of The United States of America be involved in the planning of such a minor to do....Of course in their obvious mishandling of this,it now is in all probability on the Presidents radar... but to "blame" or lay responsibility for this fiasco on the President smacks of nit picking to the 9th degree.

servantforuse -> RE: Air Force One Backup Rattles New York Nerves (4/28/2009 7:19:04 PM)

Do you still think that Obama didn't know that they 'borrowed' his airplane without telling him. Good grief. He had to know..

slvemike4u -> RE: Air Force One Backup Rattles New York Nerves (4/28/2009 7:23:08 PM)

Are you asking me whether he knew prior to this fiasco...know i don't think he has the time to involve himself in the mission flights of his backup transportation...your insistance that he had to know....makes me wonder about Packer fans the world over, perhaps too much cheese?

Lucylastic -> RE: Air Force One Backup Rattles New York Nerves (4/28/2009 7:23:49 PM)

To add, the plane wasnt actually air force one, it was a backup, so strictly speaking Mr Pres may not have needed to know at all, as AF1 would be ready and waiting, should he have needed it.

yep someone screwed up but the devil is in the details
Lucy
