pinnipedster -> RE: Geeky Porn Question... (4/29/2009 10:22:36 AM)

Hmmm, depends on the kind of porn. What I have mostly seen lately is still photos of women in bondage or undergoing some kind of torment, in which case I am absolutely identifying with and wishing I was her -- to the point where I sometimes think the only career choice that I could truly enjoy would be that of young, cute, female bondage model, for which, sadly, I am mentally well suited, but physicaly totally unqualified. The erotica I tend to enjoy most is in written story form (though appropriate ilustations help). There, who I identify with depends on the story -- it's usually the submissive or "victim" regardless of gender, if it's some kind of D/s dynamic. Given my gender issues, feminization stories (whether forced or sympathetic) are definitely among my favorites, if well-written. One problem I have had is the story that starts out with this premise, but skips over the details of the actual feminization experience to get to the fucking. In fact, that's often my objection to a lot of written porn, and for that matter, what cyber-sex I have had: I want to know who the characters are, how they got there, how they feel about what's happening. The actual thrusting and groaning may be wonderful to experience, but it's very dull to read about. I remember one story in a cheapo porn paper that started out promisingly enough with the main character being a detective who was going to investigate a case involving a woman abducted into sexual slavery -- but then there was like five pages of him fucking his secretary before going out the door. And I kid you not, as I skimmed along, I gasped in amazement around the third page when there was a paragraph that actually contained more than one sentence. It was a very good example of "how not to" for writers. Interestingly, I've read a few romantic novels recently -- for example, Phillippa Gregory's The Other Boelyn Girl -- which I greatly enjoyed, but I was particularly surprised to find how strongly I identified with the heroine/narrator, and how much I enjoyed the sections where she is being courted by and falling in love with Henry VIII. It really made me wish for the same kind of feelings. This is where my gender confusion kicks in, as I long to be courted in that fashion -- the idea makes me feel delightfully feminine and fluttery -- but I have a lot of trouble actually imagining being in love with a man, and sustaining a relationship with one. (So, if there are any women out there for whom the idea of playing the masculine role in a romance, drop me a line....) However, I should note I tried years ago reading some Harlequin-type romance novels (at the time I was considering the idea of trying to write them -- it seems like a large market) but wow, were they stupid and dull. So I don't think the romance alone is enough -- again, I want characters and stories and settings that are interesting in themselves. As for video porn, to be honest, I haven't been exposed to enough of it; it's just never had the same appeal to me as written. I suspect that for a full-length film, I'd again want some kind of story that I could get into. If it's just something to jack off to, then, not necessarily. (I've read a statistic from someone in the hotel industry that, when someone orders a pay-per-view adult film in a hotel, the average length of time the film is actually watched is eleven minutes. I don't think one needs any great mental leap to guess why....) However, as to the theory suggested that in guy/girl porn, they often use average-looking male actors, I've certainly heard that suggested as one reason for the popularity of people like Ron Jeremy. If Joe Sixpack watching sees some guy who looks like Brad Pitt screwing a hot big-busted porn actress, he probably just feels jealousy. But when you see a not-particularly-handsome guy with a bit of a beer belly doing her, you think, "Hey, maybe I've got a shot!" (It could also have something to do with economics -- it might be that the really hot guys find they can make more money elsewhere, and don't have particular trouble getting laid, either. On the other hand, dumpy looking guys might be willing to work cheap on the theory it's the only way they'll ever get to touch women like that....)
