Since it feels like the thread is hyper-scrutinizing one person and because I am procrastinating from doing work I decided to do about ten minutes worth of googling to figure out a few things: - the Institute for Advanced Study of Human Sexuality (IASHS) is not a venture or affiliated with Gloria Brame - IASHS is not accredited by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (http://www.chea.org) which is the main gateway of accreditation for Colleges and Universities - IASHS is accredited by the California state Bureau for Private Postsecondary and Vocational Education (http://www.bppve.ca.gov/) Since it seems like none of the people (myself included) who posted on this subject are actually looking for a therapist, it seems a little weird to continue it. C~

Wildfleurs, I only responded to the OP that mentioned Gloria. I also remarked that I and others read her stuff and enjoy it. I really don't think it matters as far as her writing ability About the IAHS thing, it is not accredited by the Council of Higher Education Accreditation, as you said. That is really what people refer to when they say an accredited institution. In other words if you go there and think you can transfer your credit or whatever to your local colleges, think again. Basically the California State Bureau thing will accredit any private school created online or whatever on about anything, but also warn you that the credits are non transferable to an accredited institution. For people who say that is where they obtained their PhD only tells me that they don't have one from a real university. If someone has a degree from such an institution I don't mean to denigrate your work, but I was confronted directly on this.

So back to the discussion of therapy. Choosing a therapist is tricky business, but, in my opinion, you can't base it solely on credentials. Its definately something to think about, but, if you never actually meet the person you won't know if they are someone you feel comfortable talking to. When I was looking for a therapist I found a very helpful article which describe all sorts of things to look for when making your first phone call, to your first visit, etc. Unfortunately I can't find it now. But when I just did a search I found many articles that could be used in the same way. Also, unless you are seeking therapy to talk specifically about "lifestyle" issues you dont necessarily NEED a kink friendly therapist. I went to a grief therapist for a while to deal with the loss of 3 family members within 6 months of eachother and we even talk about communication issues in my relationship. We tried once to talk in terms of the M/s-ness of my relationship, but she seemed a little lost, so I didnt bring it up again. I found her to be a very useful resource despite knowing little to nothing about kink. Another thing to consider is that therapists dont know about everything, they specialize in certain fields, so you may want to see more than one (not necessarily at the same time though) to deal with different issues. For example, my slave is seeing a "vanilla" therapist to deal with depression issues, but for couples councilling we will probably see a kink friendly therapist. Respectfully, ~I.D.
