LONDON (Reuters) - Overweight people eat more than thin people and are more likely to travel by car, making excess body weight doubly bad for the environment, according to a study from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine.
"When it comes to food consumption, moving about in a heavy body is like driving around in a gas guzzler," and food production is a major source of greenhouse gases, researchers Phil Edwards and Ian Roberts wrote in their study, published in the International Journal of Epidemiology.
"We need to be doing a lot more to reverse the global trend toward fatness, and recognize it as a key factor in the battle to reduce (carbon) emissions and slow climate change," the British scientists said.
They estimated that each fat person is responsible for about one tonne of carbon dioxide emissions a year more on average than each thin person, adding up to an extra one billion tonnes of CO2 a year in a population of one billion overweight people. The European Union estimates each EU citizen accounts for 11 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions a year. (Reporting by Ben Hirschler, editing by Tim Pearce)

At first I was repulsed by that article, then tried to be more objective, and there is a point to that.  I have seen people drive around a parking lot  multiple times to get as close as possible to a building.  My neighbors drive their children to school on a warm day rather than walking the few blocks taking 10 min.  I'm not sure it makes a huge impact, but as they say, every little bit helps for the environment.

Yep, heard about this study, or at least a very similar one a while ago.  I personally just want to slim down a bit, because of poor self image.

Very interesting report, Ms. Awesomeness… ;) [:)]

… gave me the idea for a response to the allegation of… “You’re too thin”… “just tryin’ to do my part in saving our planet, where I can.”

I read somewhere that fat people cost the airlines an extra $538m in fuel costs every year.
And we need to get rid of most of the school busses too.
I got stuck behind one and they were stopping at every other house! And most of the u/m's that got off it were overweight! Those kids need to walk!
One u/m was probably 10-12 years old with a beer belly and he was gnawing on a tootsieroll bar as he got off!
I was right behind the bus and there were about 10-12 cars behind me.
The um's on the back of the bus started sticking their tongues out at me so I gave them the finger!
They started giving me the finger back when all of a sudden the bus pulled over and the driver went marching up to the back of the bus! Ha, Ha!
So we all got around the bus. That's a neat trick, try it the next time you get stuck behind a school bus.
Those fat asses should be walking!

Taken to the extreme, how can one breathe and be green at the same time?

On "The Simpsons" last night, the smart little cartoon character had to be put on some pretty extreme happy pills because all the environmental hysteria drove her to utter despair and depression...

In reality, I wonder how many environmentally conscious people off themselves due to all the hype. Either because they're so depressed about the coming Armageddon, or as a means of reducing their carbon footprints.

Sanity, not enough.

Drop dead and ask your ashes to be used as fertilizer to save the planet.

Lol. You must do your part for the environment. Conform. Perhaps re-education in necessary to enlighten you.

My brother is skinny and eats everything in sight. He has a high metabolism. Where does he fit into these plans?

Crush -> RE: Stay slim to save the planet (4/21/2009 5:03:42 PM)

So, eating less, but living longer?   Where is the Cost/Benefit analysis?  At what "age" of thin do you begin to cost more to keep you around (from an "energy cost") than someone who is not thin who dies younger?

Seriously, we may need to get into shape, but for the ability to enjoy life more fully.  But to start blaming "being fat" for "Global Warming" is kinda silly.

I mean, aren't there "Starving African Kids" offsets to "Flabby Americans" somewhere?

Maybe I could start a business modeled after  Al Gore's "Carbon Offset" ... a "Flab Offset" ...hmmm.

Of course, the story at http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0409/21467.html talks about our porky lawmakers and their problems with weight gain....
