Status: offline 		After more than 30 years in pro football, John Madden has finally decided to retire. The former head coach of the Oakland Raiders, career W,L,T=103,32,7 (all with Raiders). Won Superbowl XI. He's enshrined in the Football Hall of Fame (2006). Lent his name to one of the most successful video games of all time too. At least he's not staying in the game too long like his former partner Pat Summerall did. The only thing I wonder now is who will Frank Caliendo get to make fun of (besides Bradshaw)? I'm gonna miss the Turducken feast, and the horse trailer, along with his colorful(?) broadcasts, and remember that he is the reason why telistrators are no longer used much (lol).

Status: offline 		This upsets me, even though he's getting older and deserves to enjoy a nice retirement.

I grew up with Madden calling the games, and he really explained well about the plays, players, teams and the strategies. I learned a lot.

I remember Howard Cosell too, but not nearly as well. He could be kind of annoying.

I'm gonna pout.

Status: offline 		When he was with the Raiders, did he travel by airplane back then? Has he always been afraid of flying, or did he have a air travel close call/religious moment at some point in his past?

Status: offline 		Madden was a coach for the Oakland Raiders football team before becoming a sportscaster for one of the Big 3 channels. He does voices for his line of football video games (during which I need Kitten's gun to shot the video system with when Alexis would play them).

To me no great loss...maybe I should hide the video games as a final memorial (or to keep my sanity).

Nope, he just didn't fly. As far as I know he always took a bus even in the early days. No close calls that I know of- he just didn't wanna fly.

As head coach of the Oakland Raiders from 1969 to 1978, Mr. Madden
flew on chartered jets.

When he started as a broadcaster in 1979 he hated flying and the
claustrophobia it caused. That is when he decided that he would not
fly anymore. At first he took the train from game to game. Then there
was a time when the train schedule did not work with his work schedule
so CBS, the network he was working for at the time, rented Dolly
Parton's tour bus for him. Soon after that he got his own tour bus.
Now he rides around in the Madden Cruiser.

Status: offline 		A lot of folks did not like John Madden as a broadcaster. I thought he was great. He knew the game,was funny and brought everything down to a level that even kittensol could understand..
