Well, last night, for the first time in a long time, we got our little band together for a session, and desperately wanting to avoid the usual randomness and endless repetition of the same old songs - or rather bits of songs, and winding up playing 8 bar blues as the only thing we can all play together and in time, I took charge.
Our problem as a band is clear from the previous paragraph - none of us are serious about it, none of us can actually play and we each have different ideas about what is and what isnt worth doing - even such minor matters as staying in time can produce arguments. Luckily however for us I have the problem of a lack of patience and an ego the size of a small mountain. Equally lucky for us last night, someone dropped in who could actually play the drums very well.
So I took charge. I selected a song that is so piss-easy that no one could fuck it up - but even then I simplified it quite a bit to meet our ability range. A song that presented only one challenge - that not everyone should play at the same time and which needs a steady build up to a crescendo of a chorus; the challenge being to convince some that they should stay silent until told to come in.
And I achieved it. Or maybe, we achieved it. In three takes, we got Zombie by the Cranberries down on the recording desk - in time, in tune, with the quiet drum, bass and vocal bit building slowly to a single accompanying guitar and then to a huge crescendo when I came in as well, including the twiddly lead guitar bit and the vocals (both of which latter were of course, performed by yours truly). And it wasnt bad - it wasnt only not bad, it was fairly good in fact.
Our drummer for the night thought me a genius - a matter in which on this rare occasion he was mistaken; he, being of the younger generation and only about ten years old when Zombie came out was under the impression that there and then I had concocted the whole thing. With some reluctance, since obviously I expect to be admired for my achievements and in fact anyone else's I can co-opt, I did have to inform him of the provenance of the musical masterpiece previously attributed to me but fair's fair - given he'd never heard the song he did a pretty good improv on the drums.
One question remains - how come I can sing like an Irish woman with the accent and everything? So, tonight, I'm going to be Dolores O'Riordan.........
