Very true, Celeste... but speaking as a person who knows Kal in real time, he DOES do all that stuff. He and MsMlicious are very open and welcoming, and IMO do a lot to bring in the new. Often, it's a lot of work for nothing.
As for myself... I only go the "I will be at Munch X" if they have failed to materialize a solid coffee date. Not even I am so sadistic as to drop someone into a party without a clue. Though I do think about it!
