actually a tattoo is there for life, my first two brand's faded after a year, my third brand has already started to fade after 2 months

edited to add: the tattoo removal will leave you with a big nasty scar that is akin to a patch of 3rd degree burns rather than just lines of 3rd degree burns,

What complete and utter nonsense.  I've seen dozens of people who have had tattoos removed and their skin is not scarred in the least.  You wouldn't even know they had a tattoo, much less had one removed, if they didn't tell you.

and most branding i have seen done today in the scene is done with a cautery pen and that does not leave 3rd degree burns, just 2nd at worst....

If that's true, then you're seeing "brands" done by people who have no business doing them and it could very well be why yours start fading after 2 months.

well, perhaps they have better tattoo removal processes where you are, but every removed tattoo i have seen has looked like a healed 3rd degree burn...and taken at least 3 times with the laser tool, i have heard of 7 times...or perhaps the burn units are better here....

mine is fading after two months because 1) it was a demo for a class at a national event 2) time was limited 3) the brand took 30 minutes as it was 4) the brander did not know me at all, nor my reactions to being branded, so she did not go as deep as she would on other people 5) the nature of cautery branding is that it makes 1st degree burns in the dermis (strike branding goes beyond the dermis in to the sub-cutaneous fat) and because the cautery pen does not go beyond the dermis it can make closed shapes (if you did that with a strike brand, the skin inside the closed shape would necrotize) however because it is only 1st degree burns to make the brand permanent you must repeat the process a few times...6) i haven't had this brand repeated...because i do not trust anyone else to do the detailed design that took 30 minutes of branding (i have never heard of a cautery brand taking more than 10 minutes) and get it right...

is that all?

ya see, this is why I think if you must have a marking, a tattoo is a better way to go, you can have it removed if the relationship goes south. a brand is there for life. I think people get so caught up in the romance of it all that they do not stop to think about the ramifications.

I have to agree with chelle - almost every brand I've seen done faded eventually - the longest one I saw last was seven years.  Its been two and a half years since the branding and while the level of it being a raised scar has diminished, its still there and still holding its shape.

...because no image i could ever think of, could last the test of time.

That is my problem with them too... I like to design, whether it be rooms or drawings, and I am filled with designs and possibilities, but when it comes to something so permanent, nothing really satisfies me.  I can paint anything, then paint over it if I want, but not so with either tatt's or brands.  But I'm still looking, thinking, deciding, so maybe I'll find something one of these days.
