Well here I am, I have been a slave for the past 17 yrs, serving one Master, currently released from service and in my late forties and no college degree.
I am curious to learn, are there any others that have started a new life so late ? , and if so, what mistakes or learning lessons can you share, and is college my only answer to independence? what would a good career be for someone my age, something to take me from current to retirement age ?

It's a good time to get grants for continuing education. I am a consultant but haven't been able to get enough work lately so I'm going back to college and I'm 48. I asked at the college if many older people are going back and was told that the average student age there is now 39. Out of curiosity I asked a man who walked in (and looked older) if he was a student and he is a laid off auto worker going back to college.

As for what you should aim at, make sure it is something that you think you would like. While I get scores of 100% on accounting tests I hate accounting. Whatever you choose, the market may be very different in two years after you get an Associates Degree.
