WASHINGTON (AFP) – The CIA is "no longer" operating secret prisons used by the intelligence agency to interrogate terror suspects, and plans to shut all remaining "black sites," the spy agency's director said Thursday.
The statement by the Central Intelligence Agency chief confirmed the spy service was carrying out an order from President Barack Obama to shut down the secret prisons that have been condemned at home and abroad as a flagrant violation of human rights.
"CIA no longer operates detention facilities or black sites and has proposed a plan to decommission the remaining sites," CIA director Leon Panetta said in a letter sent to agency employees

Good News...
It seems we may just be back on our way to being a shining example of democracy and justice in the world again!!!!  The fact that our government was operating black sites, and yet criticizing others about human rights atrocities always made me throw up a little  in my mouth....

No, I'm sure you and your article are mistaken.

There were, are, and never will be any secret prisons.

Fox News told me so, and if you can't trust Fox who can you trust?

why bother having your own prisons when you can just outsource it without risking any negative PR ;)

That's the spirit.

Let's outsource our torture and illegal imprisonment.

Then we have plausible deniability.

US MARINES admit to using repeated Visual torture on Saddam Hussein, afterwards forcing him to give up his signature.

Matt Stone and Trey Parker, the creators of South Park, were given a signed photo of Saddam Hussein by US marines after the former Iraqi leader was shown their movie in prison.

While I love South Park, I'm pretty sure there were a few things a little more serious going on in our CIA prisons.

from the info i have heard over the past 8 years...waterboardering only occurred 3 times to extract info from terrorists to stop terror attacks.

http://www.thaindian.com/newsportal/world-news/bush-vetoes-torture-ban-law-saying-it-ties-cia-hands_10025493.html

CIA director Michael Hayden has admitted to Congress that the agency used the technique to get information from three top Al Qaeda operatives, including Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the suspected mastermind of the Sep 11, 2001 terrorist attacks who was captured in Pakistan in 2003. Congress previously banned waterboarding and other harsh tactics, but the Bush administration said the law did not apply to intelligence agencies. The top US law enforcement official, Attorney General Michael Mukasey, has refused to tell the Senate whether he believed waterboarding was legal or not. Lawmakers based the content of the bill on the contents of the US Army’s handbook for interrogation techniques, which expressly prohibits mock drowning and other use of force. Bush approved techniques other than those allowed in the Army Field Manual in an executive order last July. Bush said the CIA programme to question terrorist leaders and operatives had produced “critical intelligence that has helped us prevent a number of attacks”. He cited the foiling of several attacks, including plots to attack a US Marine camp in Djibouti and the US consulate in Karachi, and plans to crash passenger planes into Library Tower in Los Angeles and Heathrow Airport or buildings in downtown London. “Were it not for this programme, our intelligence community believes that Al Qaeda and its allies would have succeeded in launching another attack against the American homeland,” Bush said.

That wasn't meant to be serious, but to be serious, in what context did Fox broadcast those reports?

As I recall, they did nothing but defend the whole concept.

What I saw was he "admitted" to it occurring three times, not that it "only" occurred three times.

How many times was it used that he is not admitting to?

How many times is beside the point anyway.

Once was too many.

What seems to be consistently ignored in these arguments is that what we do sets a precedent for how our own troops will be treated.

And yes, I know our soldiers have been tortured in the past, but we always maintained our principles and never responded in kind, until Bush and Cheney.
