http://crooksandliars.com/julia-rosen/ad-will-make-you-sick       I fail to see how it takes from others rights.  Tho- I dont view this as the issue of our lifetime.    Food on the table is the issue of our day.   Not these side issues.  Working in group homes- everyone has a different idea as to how a home/household should be run.

Basically while we can all get along in public.  (for the most part)    But up close- to live together- set up household, it wont work.

As the years- go on- I see more households- go from 1 or 2 people- to move in friends or relatives.  (out of necessity)

Assuming there IS Social Security- why would anyone ruin it by a same sex marriage. (or even a traditional marriage!)

Do you see households getting larger?   If so when?

I am surprised by the recent 2 states doing the gay marriage thing.  The banking crises is so much bigger.  (to the system) -(flatter me all ya like- just don't pick my pocket)

Your turn.

I don't understand your post, Hunkie. Either abolish marriage altogether, and force everyone who wants a relationship contract into civil unions, or legalise marriage for everybody, gays included. I still don't see what society has got to loose with the accession of marriage rights by gay men and women.

I'm proud to live in New England  .

It's ironic, the religious fanatics tried that same argument here and low and behold.....same sex marriages has not destroyed personal freedom at all! Too bad the rest of the 48 states can't be open minded enough to follow Iowa and Vermont's example, or even Canada's example.

We have nothing to fear, but fear itself.

And Bridesmaid dresses.

I found the link to the "Is Your Man Gay" quiz hilarious.

Are you kidding? If gays are allowed to marry, wedding planners will  be overwhelmed, there's going to be uneven sales of bride and groom cake toppers and wedding rings, and there could be a glitter explosion of some kind!

This equal treatment thing is totally going to have disastrous consequences

Alan Dershowitz(sp?) was interviewed on NPR yesterday re gay marriage. He said get the government out of marriage entirely. We don't expect the state to do baptisms or funerals, why should they do marriages?

I'm not sure how that would work for legal purposes, but it made sense to me.

I heard his interview. I disagreed with him for one reason: marriage is not always a sacrament, but it is always a legal contract.

Marriage *is* an economic issue. Joint taxes and other tax incentives... it's important.

Beyond that, I (sometime in the future, hopefully) want to have a full-proof contract that my family *can't* break... making my (future) husband my next-of-kin. I want the same rights afforded me and my husband afforded to my mother and my father. If my father gets deathly ill and unable to make his own medical insurance... my grandmother (who lives across the country and sees any of us on average of once every 2 years) doesn't have the capability of superseding my mother's decisions regarding my father's health. Why would/should I be content with a 'medical power of attorney' form which, with a quick hearing, can be completely broken (and yes, I know my mother would try to do that, as well as the parents of almost every gay person I've met)? Of course, that's a completely different realm (and much more personal).

There's always a way to earn money. Employment will go up and down, here and there; it's cyclical and nothing out of the ordinary.

The issue/s of the day is/are consumerism and disillusionment with politics.

Consumption is the natural state of human existence and people do not get disillusioned with politics instead they get disillusioned with politicians, strictly speaking.

The State has no business engaging in bigoted discrimination against its citizens.  There is such a thing a rational discrimination (e.g. there is a reason why we don’t let seven year olds have driver’s licenses) but that doesn’t apply here.  The answer to gay marriage is simple.  We need a constitutional amendment that requires legal recognition of marriage between any two consenting adults (and perhaps more than two – but I don’t want to get into that now).  The same amendment would also make it clear that nobody can require any church or religious organization to perform ceremonies for gay couples since that would be a violation of religious freedom.  There are plenty of churches and religions that would be willing to perform such marriage ceremonies and – this being America – people are free to start up their own church.  I believe that this is what will eventually happen.  It is interesting to note that the gay marriage cause is playing out similarly to the Suffragette movement.  Before the Nineteenth Amendment was passed there were States (Utah, Idaho, Wyoming, and Colorado) that granted women the right to vote.  The same thing is happening now.  I don’t know how long it will take but we as a society will get there.  The Christian fundamentalists can hide under there bed if they are that afraid.

come on people, show a little respect. marriage is a sacred institution conducted by an Elvis impersonator that lasts a good 50% of the time (here in the US anyway)

There is no reason that if my cousin dies, his partner of ten years who is also raising their adopted son with him should be able to keep living in their home, remain as parent of their son etc. Of course gay marriage is important.

For the same reasons that marriage between heterosexuals is important. Otherwise every person who didn't like who their kid married would, in case of a hospitalization and/or death prevent the spouse from; seeing them in the hospital, making sure their medical directives were followed, raising their offspring in the religion they chose, attending the funeral etc.

Yeah, but there really is absolutely zero benefits  that can't be arranged without requiring marriage.

I agree, get government out of marrage altogether - It's about the perfect compromise to not step on any toes on either side of the fence.

Then anyone can marry whoever they want; us Christians don't have to worry about government legitimizing sin, and everything's fair for anyone.  (I mean, hell - right now anyone can already marry whoever they want; just most states won't give government approval.  So why not just make it so government approval is needless?)
