Actually,
Chia Professor isn't based on an African-American nor is Chia Guy.....

The obama chia was an obvious attempt to capitalize on obama, or "honor" it, like 15 bazillion other things I saw at my local Walmart/Walgreens/CVS

So was the George W. Bush action figure in a flightsuit... of course, those will probably be worth something someday... god knows they'll be pretty rare considering how many were burned in effigy, and blown apart with M-80's on the 4th of July...

The Obama chia? I vote silly... and possibly collectible.

Oh, and the Obama action figures will be out well before Christmas... the pre-orders for them beat Bush's by almost 60%! President Barrak Obama, dressed in a black three peice and red tie, with kung fu grip!

W. W. W............ Are you sure you aren't secretly infatuated with him?

I'm betting the President had to have gotten a good laugh out of this one. Even if Walgreens and a few others are offended, the men in the add himself seems to be secure in his own skin.

It is little more than the typical P.T. Barnum theory at work.

i remember about 10 years ago seeing a Chia Head that looked a lot like Bill Clinton.

No it's not racist....i truly believe the company's goal was a marketable, and positive product.

However,  of all the "Chia", the only two based on actual human beings (and not cartoon characters or animals) are African-American.  Some things are so deeply ingrained in people's psyche's that they don't realize how they can be manifested.  Often, people are truly amazed that people find certain things offensive, because they haven't been the type of people to label a person as "less than" based purely on race, or been at the receiving end of such hatred. Though i thnk the company meant no harm...still, i could totally understand how the lack of caucasian Chia pets might make someone else question the intent of the folks at "Chia Inc."

Vendaval -> RE: Is Chia Obama racist? (4/7/2009 7:23:19 PM)

And this is truly the heart of the matter.  Images like Uncle Ben's Rice and Aunt Jemima pancake syrup play to the uncle and mammie caricatures but have been common products for so long that most Americans do not realize the significance.

Another thought:

Okay, as President you have to accept the fact that your image is going to be used to sell magazines, in parody, satire, etc.  It comes with the territory.  But making a buck off of your image?  I mean the Chia people couldn’t take my image and use it without my permission (ironically, the Chia-Marc2b would have more hair than me) so on what basis are the using President Obama’s image?  Granted that for obvious PR reasons the President can’t sue private citizens.  Theoretically, yes (he is, after all, a citizen just like the rest of us) but practically, no.  So, did the Chia people make an offer?  At the very least they should donate a portion of the proceeds to his favorite charity or something.

I like the way that you think. Hopefully, they won't sell a single one of these things, but in the sad event that they do, giving the proceeds to charity is a very good idea.

Fast reply: It's silly, but I don't find it racist or offensive

Tacky? Yes.

Racist? No.

Of course I've been hanging out in the chia-herb-garden.

Just about everything here pretty much cracks me up.

Would a Chia Bush or a Chia Nixon Or a Chia Mao be racist? If the answers are no then the Chia Obama is not racist.

They didn't make a Chia Bush, Nixon or Mao.

These types of items and imagery need to be understood in their historical and cultural context.  Check out the film documentary Ethnic Notions for a better understanding why many people find these caricatures offensive.

I got myself into a bit of warmish water a few years back in a college class where this was screened, along with that horrible Spike Lee movie, Bamboozled.   The question I asked was, when does an archetype become a stereotype?

I don't see anything racist here.  I see somebody trying to move a product in a down economy.  That's a good thing.  Really, what is the difference between this, and marketing a latex mask in the likeness of a President?  Those get a lot more disrespectful than this looked like.  His likeness is in the public domain.

Owner59 -> RE: Is Chia Obama racist? (4/7/2009 9:33:45 PM)

Bamboozled was a brilliant adaption of "The Producers" but instead of show called "Spring Time For Hitler & Germany",it`s a modern minstrel show that is the fodder of the scam. The scam,a show so horrible that it`s sure to get the producer fired(what he wants) but it becomes a hit. He(Daman Wyanes)ends up tragically murdered in a love triangle.

There`s very funny bits by Tommy Davidson and some slamming tap dancing by Savion Glover

The neurotic producer pitches the fated show to executive producer "Mr. Dimwitty".

Not a movie for the un-sophisticated.

It wasn't an adaptation, it was a ripped off plot, to make a statement about modern stereotypes, vs. the earlier ones.  I couldn't find a single character to still like at the end.  Just an unpleasant movie.  I really like some of Spike Lee's films, but this was bad.

Now, see, that's a valid question. I didn't know these damned things until I moved over here, so I have no idea either.

What? That's shocking! What do you guys have over there instead of Chias? No wonder you moved....

As i said, i don't find it racist, but i understand why some might...And Chia Profesor and Chia Guy (Chia dad, for that matter)aren't named after actual people.  Though i will be pushing for a Chia Pope Benedict...can't see how anyone would mind that[8|]....

VioletGray -> RE: Is Chia Obama racist? (4/8/2009 4:34:58 AM)

There is still racism in the country, and there always will be, because people are human, and on some animal level different will always equal bad.  Once again, racism will always happen, we will always have to fight against it.

BUT

One thing that makes fighting racism harder is when people cry "wolf." Every time someone says something like "Chia Obama" is racist, or "Obama Chicken Fingers" is racist people become a little more jaded, so that by the time some company comes out with "Coon D. Jigaboo's Watermelon flavored fried chicken" Everybody's like "Yeah, whatever."

barelynangel -> RE: Is Chia Obama racist? (4/8/2009 4:38:38 AM)

People need to get a life and some thicker skin. The only person to me who has a right to object or be offended is Obama. Everyone else trying to make this a racial issue needs to recognize something very important, if this crap of whining about anything negative about Obama is people, persons or whatever being RACIST, there probably won't be another part black or black president for a long time after Obama. Its getting ridiculously tiring when blacks or people who are looking for the racial angle whine about everything being racist when i don't remember them stamping their feet when BLACK people said things about our white presidents. I mean come on, don't people have enough to bitch and moan about instead of looking for things to cry racism about.

Hell the Man is part white, so is the racism about his black side or his white? I am sooo confused. Would someone please explain which side is supposed to feel people are being racist towards them? I mean many times white people have people being racist towards them for being white yes? Though its kept hush hush because its not politicaly correct.

Obama is President, he is part black and white, he is not President BECAUSE he is black or white. I really wish people would quit trying to make him and everything said or done because he is President all about his blackness, because it seems no one ever remembers his whitness..
