SailingBum - i am so glad that you have proof positive that you have a heart - even if it is misbehaving. Sounds like you are having ventricular ectopy, which is a really nice way of saying that every so often your heart gets its kick start from the ventricles not the atrium.  The result is that the heart doesn't pump blood effieciently for that beat. It's very common and in most people doesn't do anything to them, other than making them a bit aware of what is happening. Have them myself every so often.

As for being able to diagnose it from having your pulse counted for 15 seconds? Good luck with that. It would take a 24 hour halter monitor to make that diagnosis. I suspect that you will have a bunch of tests, and at the end of them, it will be determined that you won't need treatment. Of course, if you start passing out, or dropping your blood pressure, you might get a pill or two, or a pace maker. It would be awful if you fell out of the boat and drowned because your heart was acting up.[:D]

There's a simple reason why they miss it...

They're not paying attention for it.

Most doctors I've been to have the NURSES take heartrate and other vitals. Depending on the type of nurse, it's very possible that they haven't ever been trained to look for it (or what it could mean).

This means, of course, that if your actual doctors took a look there's no saving grace there, but if they didn't and the nurses did that's likely why it was missed (plus, if you've never indicated that you think your heartbeat is irregular, how are hey supposed to know that the heart beat is irregular *for you* since it really is different for each person? I have a really strong and hard heart beat, compared to my mother whose heart is just not as pronounced). You're *supposed* to push when something's wrong. They're taught that if the patient isn't persistant, they're not in need.

I'm not one to defend our healthcare system, but this does bear pointing out. Actually, this is more likely a cause of not having national healthcare (with policies that all doctors MUST follow... such as barelyangel's doctor taking pulse by the neck, which I'd actually not heard of). One of the benefits of heavy regulations caused by nationalizing a system is that... well, it's regulated. Everyone has to go through the same processes.

Of course, that's also the main downfall.

(I'm starting to blather, I'll stop now)

I now have proof that I have a heart.  Recently I had a echo cardiogram  ECG  NOT a EKG and saw my heart with my own 2 eyes. All you folks that were unsure I have the proof.

So here is the thing.  I"ve been going to the doc now for the past 3 or 4 years,  You know the getting older thing.  Bear with me on this as there is going to be a test at the end.

I am at the doc 4 years ago explaining that I'm light headed at times.  1st clue
I am at the doc 4 years ago explaining that shortness of breath when playing sports at times.  2nd clue

Doc is like let me check your carotid artery again.  "it's fine nothing to worry about"

Go see the doc this year.  again full checkup.  Im like doc the reason I'm here is because you know how you bang your thumb with a hammer and it THROBS...  That is what my chest felt like after a shower.  Dumb ass should have went to ER that night.

Doc says ok get a EKG my second one I might add.  Both are fine.

Doc does NOT seemed concerned,  However I am I press the symptom issue with doc.  Thinking it prolly won't bother her is something is seriously wrong BUT it sure as hell will bother me.  So I'm a little testy with doc.  They schedule a ECG which I had done a few days ago.

Making a long story even longer must be the Irish in me.  The Tech asks me " if anyone has told me that I have a irregular heartbeat".  I'm like "That's a new one on me"  The Tech who had 4 college deg on her wall yea I counted said " I'm surprised they missed it"

I know your thinking why are you telling me this and why should I care.

I'm glad you asked me that, cuz I'm going to tell you.  In the past 4 years Ive been to various doc prolly 7 or 8 times.  First thing they do check your pulse and blood pressure.  Why that matters is cuz that is one of the ways to check for a irregular heartbeat is by checking your pulse.  Silly me always thought the "faint/ shadow pulse" was normal.  Well it's not.

I have no clue what the odds are of 8 trained medical personal over a 4 year period missing the "shadow beat".  Meanwhile I am explaining to the doc the my symptoms which you guessed it are indicators of irregular heartbeat.   But now I have a first hand knowledge / understanding of why the US is ranked like 30 th in quality of care of industrialized nations.

Yes there is a point to all of this.  Doctors and their staff make mistakes all the time.  As my dad used to say docs bury their mistakes and here I thought dad was being upset and dramatic.  Well he wasn't!   When you feel a doc is not being pro active enuff once you explain your health issue FIRE THEM which I have done.  Oh and get a ECG not a EKG.

As far back as I can remember I have had a "shadow beat" as I would check my pulse at times playing ball, which I have done my entire life.  I'm scheduled for more test it's prolly nothing serious most times it's not.  So get checked out! and get a 2nd opinion which I know is a pain in the ass.  But do you really want to BET your life on it?

Friend of mine (63) this afternoon went to a local bar I hang out at 2 or 3 times a week.

Came in, had lunch, went outside (to have a smoke, natch....I'm quitting as we speak), said to a friend (I wasn't there) "I'm not feeling well"....suddenly gray looking....thankfully who he was with recognized the signs....said "we're going to the hospital RIGHT NOW....get IN THE TRUCK".

Of course, in his state, he complied abruptly....he was having a heart attack.

Guy saved his life.

They're ripping his chest up right this minute.

I just got the message...why the hell it's taken me this long is anyone's guess (I was already gonna quit as of this weekend, two days ago....that was the plan....any doubt about that plan is now entirely clarified).

WTF have I been thinking??????

I'm shocked that it's taken four years to gain a correct diagnosis. What is the plan of treatment now that you have been diagnosed, SB and do you have suitable insurance coverage? Good luck with stabilising your condition.

the.dark, it must have been a very scary period for you. Both you and SB take good care of yourselves and one thing that makes me so proud of the UK - our NHS, it pains me when other countries' citizens suffer needlessly due to the greed of capitalism.

More test for now  then off to the heart doc.  yeps ins all set

&, yeah, as to the main topic:

If the doc screws up, at most s/he might get in trouble & the patient will be worse off / dismembered / dead / etc . . . . . Ie, the medical-malpractice risk is almost entirely the patient's to bear . . . . . ..

As near as I can tell, American healthcare absolutely relies on the patients pushing the issue . . . . . American medicine seems to assume that if it bothers you enough, you'll seek out medical care, & if you don't seek out medical care it must not bother you that much . . . . . The de facto template for allocating scarce / pricey medical resources . . . .. .

(I emphasize 'American' because it's all I know . . . . . )

Best,
The Demon, Kia

Yep that's just how it is.  Lots of ppl have horror stories about the medical profession.  I refer to it as being my own doc meaning bringing the possible solutions to the doc attention.  It at least gets them thinking that your knowledgable about your health issues.  Thanks for the concern and the great advice!!!

Heres a good one for you....My Mom complained about being ill, heart problems to 7 different Doctors. They all missed it. The last Dr. she saw ordered a test because she had to CRY because she was so frustrated that nobody would listen to her. Now mind you my Mom was not a crybaby. She was the toughest person there ever was as far as pain and health goes.

What did everybody miss? Triple blockage in her heart. She went into the Hospital for a procedure coded on the table and 3 mos. later was out of the Hospitalm and Rehab.

If you feel sick do whatever you can to make these stupid idots listen to YOU!

I agree. My headaches and cases of projectile vomiting were put down to migranes for over 3 months. Do people really have migraines for that long? Even after I collapsed and was taken to A&E they came to the same diagnosis.  Luckily my parents decided there had to be more to it than that and arranged for me to see a doctor privately who did a scan.  Result a brain tumour so big I was given 6 months. Thankfully a fantastic neurosurgeon decided he could remove it and he thinks it is all clear but still have another 18 months before they know for sure.

Most people instinctively know when there is something wrong with them so you need to fight to be heard.

RealSub58 -> RE: Read cuz I said so!!! (4/4/2009 8:52:23 AM)

I'm an RN with vast ICU experience and now I have a resume that says just about every sort of "out of hospital" experience.

The gal or guy  (mostly gals) who comes in and takes your B/P and HR are trained to do only that.
They have NO idea what in the world it means.
They are medical assistants.

Women and heart disease was not understood until the last 5 years so if you have a heart issue, a female MD prolly will not go the gamut on tests until you have a heart attack (MI).  Male MD's just look at a woman and say "it's just stress."  Slowly that is changing.

Office RN's are way too busy compiling charts, answering mindless phone calls from people that demand to be seen for issues they can "cure" at therapy or a confessional, giving injections, etc.  Office RN's once did major patient teaching, now they have to have a Master's degree of Nurse Practitioner to do this, with a specialty.

The sadist thing is that health care consumers think and act like MD's are gods.  Consumers will investigate the cars they buy, the iPod they purchase but have no idea that the internet has a wealth of information on any health issue known to mankind.  Healthcare consumers
don't investigate the MD's they have.
Healthcare consumer's don't ask enough questions or sadly to say the right question of their MD's.

MD's are driven as the hospitals and clinics are by capitalism. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
                                     Bottom line.

I am labeled a "psycho bitch" by just about everyone of mom's MD's and medical staff and yes, by my own.
I know too much and make them accountable.

Mom was treated for well over 1 1/2 yrs for iron deficiency. Many of the same symptoms SB had.
I was busy with my life until she called me at work and told me she was faint, dizzy and had fallen.  Her B/P was way less than normal, her blood sugar just fine.  I rushed to her house and took her to the doc the next day.  One question:  you had her take an ECG 2 weeks ago, what are the results?

2 hours later she was in the cardiac ICU, having coded in the cardiac cath lab.  2 days later she was transferred to Milw cause the MD's could not would not (?) follow the cardiologists instructions.
She came home with a 2 lead pacer and a defibrillator.
Her disease was so severe her ejection fraction was 5%.
It should be about 45%.

I really don't care if I am the psycho bitch from hell when it comes to being a knowledgeable healthcare consumer, they listen to me cause my family nor I will be a mistake they bury.

 editing to add  ~ ~

Insurance companies will not, sadly to say, will not pay for an ECG or stress test until an EKG has proven to have an underlying pathology.

I took a 4 week chronic pain management program that the insurance company would not pay for until a pysiatrist, physical therapist and psychiatrist, followed by a total body MRI scan demonstrated a need for the $22,000 program.

Private MD in countries that have social medicine are allowed to do anything they choose.  I worked in Zimbabwe as an SRN so I understand socialized medicine somewhat.

Once again the bottom line is capitalism.  A visit to the MD in one of the largest healthcare systems in SE WI begins with a visit to the financial advisor.  How will it be paid for and when.

Milk?  Milk is bad?  I live on the stuff... literally!  Okay what can it do to me?  I drink at least half a gallon a day... at least.  It helps me so much... I can't stop using it, but I might like to know what could come up! lol

He was talking about caclium based kidney stones. However, dietary calcium has not been shown to increase the incidence of kidney stones, and since your dietary calcium is in liquid form I dont think you need to worry about them coming up.

She.[;)]
And yes, it was due to the kidney stones.  It was a case of, 'well you do drink an awful lot of milk' so they wouldn't discount that it was that.  I was drinking around 7 pints a day (at least - usually more).  So it was just a decision to cut the amount 'just in case'.
