'Whether or not you believe in fate comes down to one thing: who you blame when something goes wrong. Do you think it's your fault - that if you'd tried better, or worked harder, it wouldn't have happened? Or do you just chalk it up to circumstance?'

From nineteen minutes by jodi picoult.

I think i'd have to say i don't believe in fate, how about you?

There are too many variables to answer with a simple statement.

I believe there are certain things that are ‘predetermined’, such as inclination toward personality, likes and dislikes. What one chooses to do with what they are given is up to them.
Believing in fate has little to do with one’s ability to own what is theirs.

I try to work hard at what I have control over and hope for the best at what I don't. I don't call it fate if you forgot your car keys and spent 5 minutes going back to get them... this made you 5 minutes late to work which meant you did not get above the 10th floor on your way to to top of the World Trade Center which meant you survived when your on time  fellow workers did not. I call it good or bad luck.

Murphy himself told me :

You make your own luck.

Details upon request, but I can say this much, I don't know if Elden Murphy is still alive, but with every year I age that old Man get's smarter.

Why start a thread about something you don't believe in?

i subscribe to the norse philosophy on fate.  there are two types of destiny:

the first type is what is set in place before you are born.  those things, you cannot change.

the second type is what happens tomorrow depending on what you do today.

Fate (or destiny) is something that will eventually happen, regardless.  Like death.
Therefore it exists - unless you don't believe in death?

You're never going to win at the lottery if you don't play the lottery.

Fate or self determination is the same thing in the end for all intents and purpose since no one can go back and select a different path for themselves based on the choices they've made; you always lose the gift of time.

True self determination would give you the power to review the choices made go back to that exact point in time when the choices were made and choose another option comparing choices like for like with no time penalty i.e. the time penalty incurred has a large bearing on whether or not your perceive you've made the correct choice in the here and now.

Fate and self determination are both models that don't precisely fit the human experience the truth is somewhere in between as always. It is though the most fascinating question that you'll never get an answer to.

When I was younger I had these vivid déjà vu experiences almost where I  could step out of the situation that was occurring and view the experience as familiar but from another perspective other than my own. These experiences that a lot of people have may be the best answer to this fate question. Science however will probably explain it as your mind splitting in two with your senses catching up with your memories i.e. you see something but it only registers in your memory and then your perception or the world around you is pieced together and compared with the old memory created a split second ago thus comes the sense of familiarity. The reality is your here and now perception of the world is lagging behind real events already registered as memories subconsciously. Maybe I saw this image ten minutes ago and my brain is finally unscrambling the image to create the perception of the image. It does not matter to me when I say I see the image because my brain will confirm I said I saw the image just after it was created and then the confusion will arise when you hear someone say “What are you talking about that image I showed you ten minutes ago for?” but only if you perception has caught up with the here and the now. You may instead hear them say that ten minutes later in which it will make perfect sense after the fact.

As humans we need to think the choices we make change our fate or we wouldn’t try doing anything except to experience the so called journey. Whether or not you believe in fate probably has a large bearing on if you are a pessimist or an optimist I see no other connection. Maybe you’d feel your life had no consequences if it was all down to fate. A computer game simulation is the perfect example of fate so why would you give your own life any more legitimacy in that case?

I think there may be differant "levels" of fate from lowgrade to high grade.
The ones we can "see" or perceive to the ones we'll never see or perceive.

For many people it is "fate" or "bad luck" when something they don't like happens,
but it is their "own initiative" when something good occurrs.
