Who even needs a landline anymore? My parents' was costing 30 bucks a month. They've converted it to an old cell which, with exactly the same capabilities will only cost 10 a month! The landline was a glorified voicemail at this point, too.

As much as I love gadgets and widgets and technology, I keep my land line because it shows up on the 911 system with an address. Have they made that possible with cell and VOIP yet?

All cellphones are GPS tracked if 911 is called, is my understanding. It's not as accurate as an exact address, but it's not too far off.

EDIT: Also, little known fact, even old cellphones without a plan can call 911. It's part of the reason that some places do drives for them, to distribute to homeless or lower-income people in dangerous neighborhoods, so that they can also have the ability to call 911.

Where they charge it is a different issue I'd be interested in knowing the answer to, but it is an interesting note :)

Don't count on it. A cell phone call to 911 goes, usually, to the nearest cell tower. When I'm home, my nearest tower is in another state, unless I drive a few miles south. Not all systems are updated for more than E911 services, it depends on your location.
