My Brother-in-law works for one of those telemarketing companies that sells programs on how to start your own business and make "Millions"

When he came over tonight I asked him how business was. Their company is moving into a commercial building they had BUILT for them. Every one got a bonus last month and those who are profit sharing are buying brand new cars.

It was very difficult for me to wrap my head around this. The Economy is Crap and people are spending money on how to get righ buying and selling forclosed properties.... Or Drop Shipping chap people usually buy at Swap Meets?

Can someone help me to understand how people cannot afford to pay on their homes but can afford to by other homes and resell them?

How in the hell can these guys be raking in the doe and I am having to understand that there isn't any money for a raise for me this year and next year isn't looking any better?

Same reason the convenience stores in lower-income neighborhoods sell more lottery tickets than stores in wealthier neighboorhoods. People who don't have much money become desperate for it, and make poor decisions that they think will get them the money they can't find any other way of getting.

I wouldn't be so sure they are buying homes and flipping them. What they're buying is a DVD that supposedly tells them how, but I doubt more than one out of a hundred actually manage to make it work, if that many.

You're just in the wrong business. The snake oil industry is always booming when the economy is bad. Look at it this way, at least you sleep nights, right?

My guess is that not everyone is hurting. Firm and I just returned from a week in Vegas, and there sure didn't seem to be any lack of people there spending money. The casinos were packed at night, the hotels had huge lines of people waiting to check in, people were elbow to elbow just about everywhere, and the queues for a table in the restaurants made you feel like cattle.

While I won't say there aren't problems with the economy, and yes... there are lots of people out there who have extended themselves far beyond what they can manage by living on credit... I suspect the current "crisis" policy has been talked up and inflated in order to serve other political purposes. It's amazing what change a little fear can generate.

I've no idea the situation of your particular company, but I would imagine that with the flames of fear being fanned, there are a lot of otherwise stable and healthy companies who have shifted into a protective mode... ones that otherwise might granted pay increases or invest in new positions, freeze their capital expenditures and make cut backs in order to ensure they have the means to survive.

Oh, and yes... ThatDamnedPanda does have a point... some luxury items and means of escape like alcohol and drugs will see an increase in sales along with the increased desperation of people.

Well, credit is being extended to everyone who screwed up the first time by going to far in debt via credit.

And there are foreign investors taking advantage of the currency exchange rate to buy property here.

I heard the explanation for this on the radio a few weeks back. The "get rich quick" folks and those selling swap-meet stuff buy commercial time by letting the stations pop their commercials in whenever they've got a cheap spot. They set a limit to what they're willing to spend for a minute or 30 seconds and aren't picky about where or when those spots are run. With more traditional advertisers pulling back on their spending, the stations are ending up with a lot of empty commercial slots. Running Vince and his Sham-Wow or the "I made $$$$$ sitting on my ass!" commercials fills in the holes and brings in a bit of revenue - they're better than nothing. With more folks seeing these commercials more often, more folks are buying.

we now interrupt this thread to ask an off the wall question,,,why does Mr. Sham Wow wear a head set like he's speaking to an auditorium full of people who are there for a good old fashioned revival meeting?

that just kinda bugs me

Psychics are on par with this. If someone was so psychic they could cash in on it. Per haps by insider trading of stock or the like.

There are always markets that are up during recessions. Rental properties are up and around here, vacant for about 3 days once available. People losing their homes still need a place to live.

Relocation business is up

Remodeling even if just painting or finishing rather than buying a new home is up

Retrofit...the same

Fast food serving is up...rest. too expensive.
