Thoughts on President Obama's Second PrimeTime Speech - 3/24/2009 7:29:56 PM

Status: offline 		Is this only his second prime time speech?
It seems like there have been so many more.
I will admit, I napped through most of it.
But I found it on C-Span.
If you missed it, here is the link, it is 56 minutes long.

For those who watched it, any thoughts on President Obama's speech?
So far, I have noticed that his comment, "I like to know what I am talking about", when
asked why it took him several days to comment about AIG, was very telling.

I do think that President Obama wants to drive home that we will recover from the current recession/depression, but it will take time.

Status: offline 		I still like him.   He has a long, long, long way to go, and how we are going to get there without being bankrupt, I have no clue.
Like I say, I still like to listen although he tends to change his path quite a bit in my opinion.  One minute he is going to take all and give it to the middle class, and the next minute, he is changes course because he wants the package passed by congress.

There are times, I don't agree with his policies, or some of his choices, but
I too still like him, and I pray he can and will be able to make great decisions for our country.
I also pray that he is not as stubborn as our former President, and is flexible enough to be
able to change his mind, and change the course when it is the best thing to do.
 
I have always felt he means well, and has a good heart, and good intentions!
If Geithner turns out NOT to be the best man for his job, I hope he is able to let
him go, and any other cabinet member that is not the best person suited for their position.

My concerns are on the budget proposals. His team projects 2.6% growth, and basing their budget on that. Congressional Budget Office projects 2.2%. that .4% short fall, if it occurs, is a huge amount of money and it seems being more conservative would be the better path. the second part of that is that it cuts the deficit in half over 5 years, but starts to increase it beyond that. To me that is making things better short term, and passing on the debt to later years. I do not see much difference between what is, and what has been, other than where the money is going, which is not to the American people.

I have other concerns but those are the two that jumped out at me. I do like the way he handles questions, but I am going to continue to reserve judgement to see how the issues are resolved. I have always been a result driven person, so if a politcal philosophy that I disagree with works, then I need to re-examine my political philosophy. I just do not want to see the fed wielding more money, which ultimately means more power.

Status: offline 		As usual, giving a speech being his forte, he kicked ass.
He is going to have a tough time, no doubt about it. He has no money for most of his projects, something the far right points out daily about his proposed budgets. If he does not spend money his detractors will piss and moan that he is not accomplishing anything. If he spends it the same people will still complain. So to that end, he is screwed no matter what. Still, the GOP has offered not alternatives, and as it was them and their "Prez" that created most of this mess, I think they should "put up or shut up". :)

Status: offline 		We always need detractors, even if they do not offer solutions. If nothing else it stimulates debate, so maybe plans can be refined and those with a plan can be pushed more to do the best they can do.

Status: offline 		Man, he really does remind me of Lincoln.  (I'm reading a history of Lincoln and his Admirals.)  Both men are very pragmatic and unwilling to chart a certain course when there are lots of unknowns.  Both freely admit making mistakes and view their presidency as their task to fix what's wrong.  I was very happy when Obama came flat out and said that our financial system is broken and needs repair- that's a very different mindset from the Republicans who kept claiming it was basically healthy, it just needed a temporary transfusion. 

I have a sneaking suspicion that he's also laying the groundwork for nationalizing the banks/financial institutions in trouble.  The idea that we should just write what has become a very large blank check with no accountability to the financial institutions was ludicrous.  It's about time we decided that if the taxpayers are going to bail out these institutions- we own them and might as well face that fact.  He just didn't call it nationalization- which would lead to Republican uproar.  Looks to me like he's trying to chart a middle course (again, similar to Lincoln) which is a very tricky thing to do- but I hope like hell he succeeds.

It isnt like he completes any substantive policy improvements.  With a stroke of a pen he could delete the trillions in derivatives.    But he doesnt. 

So his hand is in MY pocket- just as George Bushes hand was.   

So to smile and fake feel good over it is a time waster.
