Do you have a point to make but can't spell worth beans?   Set your browser up so that you will know when you spell something wrong.  Help yourself appear more intelligent, more thoughtful, and more importantly, keep others from picking on your spelling instead of addressing your stated points!

For Internet Explorer:  http://www.iespell.com/download.php    ieSpell is free for personal use.

In Mozilla, version 3.x, just turn it on!  Tools/Options/Advanced/General Tab.  Select "check my spelling as I type" in the middle (Browsing) section.

For Safari, it check only after activated and it seems to need to be activated each time you open the browser.  (Not 100% sure on Safari)

Now, if we could just get grammar check and fact check as an addon/plugin......

See and I just don't care, if someone is going to judge me on my Spelling and not one what I am saying then what I am saying usually won't matter to that person anyway. Besides where I usually go wrong is which spelling to use. Spell check won't help you if what you typed is actually a word.

I don't think it's so much the spelling as much as it is the grammar that gets most people irritated. We all fat finger a key every now and then, but I know what you're getting at.

Strangely enough, that was perfectly comprehensible to me (which I suspect was your point Vanity). ;-)

Even more strangely, the spell checker within Mac OS X/Safari only flagged one word of your post as incorrect... "OPRESSOIN". So much for the validity of those auto spell checks.

Which indicates that not all automatic spell checkers are defined, or set up the same. Enabling one does not guarantee that all words will be caught or flagged properly. Spelling still takes a bit of human decision and word crafting... should the author even care to use those skills or tools.

Personally, I take the author's words more seriously if an attempt to use proper spelling and/or grammar are evident. I also realize that there are any number of reasons why spelling and/or grammar errors occur, so I don't discount a post simply because it takes a bit of time or effort to comprehend it.

Some people may have not been taught the proper use of grammar and/or spelling. For instance, two of my nieces, soon to graduate from high school, have no idea on what the concept of grammatical structure through sentence diagramming is all about. They were never taught those during their public education career. Is such a concept important anymore given that they were not even taught cursive handwriting as well? Does proper sentence structure even work effectively when so much of their correspondence with each other is done via SMS or tweets?

Personally, I am a terrific speller, but a horrible typist. However, for most informal writing that I do (especially on the internet), I am not going to waste my time running a spell checker on what I write before I hit return. I am confident what I write will be understood by all who read it even if I do occasionally hit the wrong key or actually do mis-spell a word (see below):

Wouldn't work for me.I think I have mentioned it before but I have caught myself typing "now" instead of "not". I don't know why, it happens. That mistake can change the meaning of a statement drastically and no spell check will catch it. And right now I am wondering if that last sentence was grammatically correct. There are certain words which should not be used to end a sentence.

Even sorting out the two, too and to problem is probably beyond many, and forgetting the "r" at the end of the word "your". Which is another one, your, you're, yours and your's. Not to mention there, their and they're.

Such mistakes are dead givaways, so (changing voice to like those guys in heavy metal bands) YOU CANNOT HIDE, WE CAN STILL SEE YOU ! Folow with a gnarly guitar riff if you would.

Anyway, I have made a concious desision not to judge based on spelling and grammar. In the past quarter century at least, most people have learned to read phonetically. In a way it is a handicap, while solvable, it may not be worth one's time. I deemed it worth mine, but of course have not achieved perfection as of yet.

Language is the only tool we have with which to communicate and thus share ideas. Some learn to read and that is good, but they don't get to the next step. It is not the same as moving one's lips when they read, but it is. When one stops internally verbalizing every word of text and pays more attention to the context and EXACTLY how it is written, I believe they learn more, that is if the text is written correctly.

Some are impelled to study other subjects as soon as their reading skills are adequate for the task. I know it happened to me. On a form of a pre SAT at HS I was ranked at the 99th percentile in mechanical reasoning, but in spelling I was ranked 2nd percentile. But that was then.

I learned on the fly for the past twenty years or so, and even in this post, I am not so sure phonetically is an accepted spelling, it might be phoenetically. But langiage actually seems to be in a constant state of flux. How many "E"s there are in a word is one thing, but when the fovea becomes the macula, I figure some of that "license" should befall me.

Take donut and doughnut for instance, does it really matter ?

The nice thing about the automatic spellers (meant Firefox, not the old Mozilla..tks, pahunkboy) is that you don't have to take the time to spell check after you write.  It checks AS your write/type so that you can correct immediately or before you hit OK.

Spelling counts the same way a "first impression" counts.    Not necessarily a true impression, but the impression you are giving to those that read your posts.

Take your choice "the devil is in the details" or "watch the pennies and the dollars will take care of themselves", but it all comes down to the credence your post will get.

We as a species are good at determining patterns and hence decoding some of the posts above.  However, as a species, we are quick at making judgments as well.

So spell as you may...but realize the consequences of bad spelling include a diminished value of your post.

Crush, you are welcome!

IMO Misspellings are a problem if it changes the context of my post to mean something that I did not intend to say.

The silly text abbreviations, I am  not a fan of.  An extreme in either direction can be a drag.

Funny thing is- I try to correct the spell check on a few words - your know new  phrases and it wont hear of it.  yikes.

Hunk, with your linguistics it took a bit to figure out that you have a working brain. A spell check simply is not enough.

As for the addons, I run stock and I am happy. My shit runs fast and keeps running, no updates. I am not even sure if I got SP1. I see people who have the Yahoo toolbar, the Google toolbar the AOL toolbar and of course "I am an asshole with a boring job writing software" toolbar. I want no part of it. People ask me if I Yahoo, no I do not. It works and does everything I want it to do, so there is no reason to fix it.

Office 97, Professional in fact. Is there a problem because it was written in 97 ? I don't see any problems. The spell check which didn't work right is turned off anyway. I can always call Mom, she went to one of them there fancy writin' schools, a Catholic school.

Isn't it better to learn ?

I hate when this thing is quoted/used... it simply doesn't work for me (and causes a phenominal headache when I try to read more than a few words like that).
