Hello,

I've been doing some research on the psychology of masochism for an abnormal psychology class. I found so many cool and interesting articles in psychology magazines on the subject that have been interesting and thought provoking! Even as somebody in to the lifestyle I found that I had to adjust my opinions and conceptions of BDSM. One of the most interesting things I found was a survey of therapists experienced in dealing with BDSM found that people who engage in d/s seem to be generally smarter than many other groups of people.

So, have at it and thank you in advance for responding to it!

Thank you!

Ummm... didn't your teacher do a section on *not* biasing the results? You need to have more some positive options to get an accurate rating. Otherwise you'll only get people who were battered, had bad experiences with their parents and are gay.

i agree with AquaSub. You are limiting this to the negative...

No votes yet, unsurprising. Believe it or not, some of us just enjoy it as part of our positive, healthy relationships.

and the poll allows only one choice.  not all that may apply.

I saw your poll and had a bit of a wtf moment.  Then I saw this in your post and felt a touch of optimism.  This could be a lightbulb moment for you and one of those times for adjusting.  Not all masochists have had or now have shitty relationships.  Some have only nurturing and postive experiences.  It would be a great idea to alter your poll to reflect that so you can garner a more broad and unbias response.  I certainly cannot respond to any of the options.  I don't believe you can answer more than one option in a poll anyway - so if you answer the gay/bi/lesbien you cannot answer any of the others which is again going to mess up your poll.

Im with the other, which is why I chose the last. At least that is a positive reason.

Ideal childhood, adulthood hey rash choices but nothing so tramatic othere than being responsible for 3 younguns.

I am maso because well.....I love pain.  I have found that pain and the endorphine release ups my dopamine levels which is one of the brain chemicals that regulate the chemical inbalance of depression.  The one chemical that dr's rarely address. Okay the dr did try giving me some horrible meds that had me climbing the ceilings, but took me off the other which negated a balance. That lasted 2 days.

So really being maso for me gives me a sense of wellbeing in my brain and keeps the evil blues at bay.

I have to agree with previous posters.  Some people don't fit any of those categories, and some of us eschew psychological self-exploration. I've long wondered about the point of that sort of insight. I sometimes like a Big Mac? Why? Who cares, I like them! I sometimes like pain? Why? I don't give a rip.

I picked gay/lesbian/bi but I am not sure what that has to do with being a masochist. Every female sadist that I have ever played with would also fit into gay/lesbian/bi. In every F/f  sm couple you will have one who is sadist and one who is masochist, so what is the point?

As to the other choices, you only have negatives there. How is this going to prove anything?

Sadly I fail to see any correlation between masochism, abnormal psychology and homosexuality.

Most people, like myself, will probably find this very insulting and will not vote (like I am not going to).  I had none of those things and I feel like which way I swing sexually has jack shit to do with my love of the pain/pleasure correlation.  This is like saying everyone who likes spankings was beat as a child, or every guy who likes it up the ass was molested as a child, or every woman with a rape fantasy was unloved in high school.....

well i hardly find it insulting. I do think it is limiting though, and suggest the op add a few more options.

DesFIP -> RE: Masochist Poll For Masochists Only: Click All that Apply (3/19/2009 8:37:25 AM)

Why would any of those things have a relationship to enjoying pain play? I can see assuming a relationship between some of those options and submission, although the usual result is that there is no relationship, but pain play? Do you think people who eat hot sauce on their food, also a form of pain play, are more likely to be gay or not get alone with a parent? And if so, where did you get such a mistaken viewpoint?

subangi -> RE: Masochist Poll For Masochists Only: Click All that Apply (3/19/2009 8:47:59 AM)

Wow,  i knew i was different, but to be in a classification with mental and emotional disorders(schizophrenia, mental retardation)?

Guess i should rethink a more appropriate screen name.....
subabbynormal?

kolekorin -> RE: Masochist Poll For Masochists Only: Click All that Apply (3/19/2009 8:49:49 AM)

Just so you all know, I've touched on many of the criticisms you all have mentioned in the essay I'm writing for class. I have also added "find masochism a natural inclination" to the poll question. I'm sorry if I have offended people.

kolekorin -> RE: Masochist Poll For Masochists Only: Click All that Apply (3/19/2009 9:06:05 AM)

Criticism Response: My intent was not to insult, but rather to investigate. I felt I had an excellent opportunity to get feedback from a very specific group of people to determine if the things I have been reading were true. I would also like to note that I didn't preface the question "By the way, I think these things are all true of masochistic people". The responses I included for the poll are working theories among psychologists to explain masochistic behavior. Admittedly, I failed to insert something alluding to biological causes and I have rectified this error.

And just so you know, there is a difference between "abnormal" and "unhealthy". That distinction is borne out in the research I've been reading and definitely in the paper I've been writing. The DSM IV, the standard in psychology used to defines masochism as unhealthy only when it causes "clinically significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning."

kolekorin -> RE: Masochist Poll For Masochists Only: Click All that Apply (3/19/2009 9:14:06 AM)

Thank you for offering constructive criticism. It is appreciated. To that end, do you have any suggestions for adding things?

Vanityfull -> RE: Masochist Poll For Masochists Only: Click All that Apply (3/19/2009 10:33:52 PM)

so queer people are masochists.. fasinating.

FourQ -> RE: Masochist Poll For Masochists Only: Click All that Apply (3/20/2009 5:28:33 AM)

Personally I'd have asked for volunteers for an MMPI.  (Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory for those not in the know).
That would have provided you with real results which can't be obtained seriously from a seven option poll.

As for my response to the poll, my response cannot be categorised within the confines of the above.  Sorry.

I see you point though it is too easy to associate abnormal with a negative connotation. You also have to realize that many psychology research papers are biased to some extent and it is a common assumption by clinicians to classify anything they do not understand as unhealthy and abnormal. Remember that it wasn't until the early 70's that homosexuality was no longer considered a mental illness.
